More Information About this Project

Project Needs and Beneficiaries

Southern Madagascar is home to the poverty-stricken Vezo fishing community, which relies on the rich biodiversity of the region’s marine ecosystems for food and income. However, unsustainable fishing practices have degraded the marine and the Vezo tribe are facing the loss of livelihoods and culture. The area is in desperate need of development of its economy outside of fishing, but this must be done hand-in-hand with saving one of the most beautiful and unique marine environments on the planet.

Activities

Developing an environmentally beneficial Eco-lodge, run by the community with all profits reinvested or going back to the community. 25 traditional huts will be built, with all material and labour sourced from the local region.

Latest Update from the Field

Latest news on Eco-Lodge funding

By Richard Nimmo - Project Manager, August 05, 2008 07:26 PM

The Andavadoaka Eco-Lodge has continued to be a site used for camping trips and excursions throughout 2007 and 2008.
Visitors have contributed a small but significant income for the village of Andavadoaka and the fund has enabled the community to invest in local infrastructure and support needy students with scholarships to attend the local Catholic Mission school.
In October 2008 Blue Ventures (www.blueventures.org) will make a donation to the community fund of $20,000 that will finance the construction of the Eco-Lodge restaurant, kitchen, community meeting hall and Eco-Lodge utilities. The fund is seeking further funding from donors to finance the construction of the tourist bungalows. Your donation can help make the plans to finish the lodge in 2008 a reality.
