Treating Babies with Severe Jaundice in India

A child receives phototherapy treatment at an urban hospital in Bengaluru (Bengalore). Three devices are being used to compensate for their poor output: several of the blue phototherapy tube lights are burned out and others have been replaced with ineffective white bulbs. Bilirubin, the neurotoxin that causes jaundice, is broken down by blue light (430-490 nm).
