When the fourth graders from an all-girls soccer team in Madison, New Jersey won a tournament last October, they chose to donate their winnings to other kids who were not as fortunate -- kids whose fields and equipment were destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. The girls found GlobalGiving through a Google search, and realized that what the schools needed most were supplies critical to their operation.

The Madison Rockers donated their prize winnings to Support Youth at 3 Elementary Schools, New Orleans, a project on GlobalGiving that is sending essential supplies such as desks, books, and pencils to the first three public elementary schools to open after Hurricane Katrina struck.

The team's donation is helping to provide educational computer software and books to the schools' classrooms and library.

Winners of the first round of the GlobalGiving Open have been announced! These innovative project leaders now have projects posted on globalgiving.com and are ready to receive donations.

In an effort to enable more project leaders around the world to join the GlobalGiving community, GlobalGiving created the GlobalGiving Open. Here's how the Open works:

  • Project leaders were invited to submit applications to GlobalGiving.
  • GlobalGiving reviewed the project information in detail, and conducted rigorous due diligence to ensure each applicant met the high standards for entry into the GlobalGiving marketplace.
  • A group of GlobalGiving community members -- donors and existing project leaders -- were asked to "vote" by allocating "GlobalGiving bucks" to their favorite projects.
  • The projects that the most "donations" were rewarded with a spot on globalgiving.com, and the top three projects received small grants equal to the amount of "play money" they received through the voting process.

Check out the winning projects:

Community-Managed Water Project -- Kyakulumbye Development Foundation (KDF) (Uganda) Empowering individuals and households to identify their water needs and develop appropriate actions.

Women and Youth Support Project -- Ebony Foundation (Kenya) Building the long-term capacity of families to meet the needs of HIV/AIDS orphans.

Gender-Based Violence Counseling in Schools -- Women's Initiative for Self Empowerment (Ghana) Providing services and resources to children who are victims of school-related abuses.

Route Out of Poverty for Cambodian Children -- The Sharing Foundation (Cambodia) Training thousands of children in their native alphabet and numbers so they can attend school, and providing English-language training.
