Supporting Education in Malawi

By Julie Willig | Grassroots Officer

Because of your support, the Girl Up campaign is able to make a direct impact in the education of girls in Malawi. Girl Up is supporting the UN’s work in Chikwawa and Mangochi, two districts in the southern region of Malawi. In our first year, Girl Up will directly impact at least 30,000 adolescent girls through the initiatives that provide:

EDUCATION

  • 210 vulnerable girls received scholarships to attend school.
  • 323 girls completed a 9-month complementary basic education course.
  • 383 girls participated in science camps aimed to encourage girls to consider math and science careers.

HEALTH

  • More than 1000 girls, 200 community members and 60 school authorities were reached by the campaign to stop child marriage.

SAFETY

  • 70 adolescent girls have been trained as community peer educators against gender based violence.

LEADERSHIP

  • 40 girls-only clubs have been established to mobilize adolescent girls in these communities.
  • 40 girls participated in livelihood vocational trainings focused on bakery, tailoring, and beauty/salons.
  • A 4-day mentoring forum brought girls and female role models together to engage and interact.

Thank you for the role you play in helping ensure that all girls - no matter where they are born - are able to reach their full potential. You educate a girl and you change the world.
