Summary

Help us make sure that the story of clean energy transformation gets told. 430 homes and businesses now have electricity from Haiti's first town-sized, solar-powered smart grid! Each home, each person, has a story, and we're trying to capture just a few to show the world - and, critically, others in Haiti - the modest step toward 'Sustainable Energy for All' that the town of Les Anglais just took. Mayors of other towns are interested, but not all can travel all the way to Les Anglais.

Challenge

After sunset, much of rural Haiti lives by the light of kerosene. Expensive, dangerous, and bad for people's health, kerosene persists in places that lack access to electricity, but a better solutions are available. EarthSpark International has turned on Haiti's first solar-powered smart microgrid to launch what can become a replicable model for rural electrification in Haiti - providing high-quality energy services for a fraction of the cost of the dirty alternatives.

Solution

This microproject enables EarthSpark and Eneji Pwop to communicate what is happening in rural Haiti to stakeholders outside of the small town. Because Les Anglais is a seven hour drive from Port-au-Prince, many cannot come see the grid in person. As Eneji Pwop works to bring microgrid service to other towns, having a well-made video and clear images and stories from the Les Anglais grid helps people in other towns see what is possible and make informed decisions for their communities.

Long-Term Impact

We are working to bring microgrid electricity to 80 towns (200,000 people) by 2020. Electricity improves health, economic, and education outcomes and generally unlocks rural potential. The 80 grids will serve homes, businesses, and agricultural activities to improve quality of life, economic development, and food security.
