Challenge

NFTE Philadelphia serves students who attend schools located in low-income neighborhoods. On average, 89% of these students qualify for free or reduced lunch. They attend schools that lack resources, in particular, technological resources that enhance student learning. In an effort to bring this technology to low-income NFTE schools, funding for this microproject will be used to purchase one class set (10) of tablet computers.

Solution

Throughout the 2013-2014 school year, a number of NFTE Philadelphia schools will pilot new, digital learning activities that teach students about important topics in entrepreneurship. For example, to learn about new trends related to marketing through social media, students will act as consultants by analyzing various companies' social media pages and offering recommendations about how to better use these pages to reach specific market segments.

Long-Term Impact

By working to keep at-risk students engaged in their school work, NFTE spurs its participants to graduate from high school and work towards being productive citizens. Whether they pursue higher education, enter the workforce, or start their own business, NFTE instills an entrepreneurial mindset in young people so they can plan for success. Since 2007 NFTE Philadelphia has worked with over 3,000 students from the Philadelphia region and will be working with 1,200 students this school year.
