Bay Area Students Start It Up

NFTE Bay Area’s GlobalGiving project to host a summer BizCamp for local students did not quite hit our goal.  Thanks so much to those who did donate; you helped us raise over $3,000 to help offset the cost of our BizCamp materials and provide for field trips to local businesses!  Even without reaching our goal on GlobalGiving, our full-day, two-week intensive program finished earlier this month, where our students learned entrepreneurship and key concepts in a ‘mini-MBA’.  At the end of the program, each student also presented a plan for a new venture they had created and brought to life using the lessons from the camp.  We had some great businesses presented by our young entrepreneurs, as they sought to create and pitch a new venture based on both their life experience and the lessons they had learned in the classroom.  The goal of NFTE is to get students thinking in an entrepreneurial mindset, so they will stay engaged in their education and pursue goals that will better prepare them for future success.

Two aspects of the BizCamp clearly stood out to our young entrepreneurs: the field trip to CitiGroup’s offices and the business plan presentation.  The trips are meant to serve as a way for the students to meet with local entrepreneurs and to see firsthand what it takes to run a business in the modern world.  It left an impact, with one BizCamp participant saying, “The CitiGroup visit was the highlight for me. It was so inspiring and interesting to meet and network with the different entrepreneurs there. I learned a lot as well about business…”  The experience of visiting CitiGroup (who sponsored the Camp), also carried over into the creation of the business plans.  Each lesson and each trip provided served as a key lesson for how the students could market or develop their own business idea.  One student indicated as much in an exit survey, explaining, “To me, the highlight was the business plan my partner and I created. Everything seems to work around helping us perfect it. That includes meeting business professionals, visiting huge corporations, and making many elevator pitches each day.”

Thank you again for your contributions to NFTE through the GlobalGiving platform!  Your contributions are helping our Bay Area students fully realize the potential of their entrepreneurial mindset.
