Seizure-Response Dog for Oliver

A microproject by Chelsea Hutchison Foundation
Seizure-Response Dog for Oliver

Summary

The Chelsea Hutchison Foundation is currently fundraising to be able to provide a grant to Oliver and his seizure-response dog in training, Hugo. Seizure response dogs are a special type of service dog, specifically trained to help someone who has epilepsy or a seizure disorder. Due to the differing needs of each case, every service dog receives very specialized training.

Challenge

Oliver is a very sweet non-verbal boy. He has suffered many injuries from hard falls during seizures. Oliver always has a smile on his face and is the love of his Mother's life. She works so hard caring for Oliver and is incredibly committed to making his life more comfortable. He is 14 and has many different types of seizures.

Solution

Because of Oliver's physical disability and his seizures, he is often isolated and not approached by others. Having a service dog would not only greatly improve the quality of his life, but would be another set of eyes to watch Oliver and keep him safe, giving his Mother a moment to breathe.

Long-Term Impact

This particular project will provide seizure-response dogs people living with epilepsy, greatly increasing their chances of surviving life-threatening episodes that may arise. This project will also raise awareness about SUDEP to encourage further support of individuals living with epilepsy, their families, and their communities.
