This project will make it easier for Kyler's family to care for him sooner when he experiences a seizure. It will also allow Kyler to do things that other children his age can. Chelsea Hutchison Foundation will be providing a grant to help bring "Copper" home to Kyler. Seizure-response dogs are specially trained to help someone who has epilepsy or a seizure disorder. Due to the differing needs, each seizure-response dog receives specialized training.
Kyler is a 6-year old boy who has epilepsy. Copper will be trained to bring Kyler's emergency medications when needed. Copper will also help calm him when he has night terrors and when he is afraid during his many Dr. and hospital visits. The family believes having this companion for Kyler will relieve a lot of stress for all of them.
This project will help to keep Kyler safe and bring some peace to this already stressed family. Copper will be with Kyler 24/7 which means another set of eyes on him. In time, Copper may be able to alert the family prior to the onset of an oncoming seizure. That is not a trained task, but comes with the bond between the service dog and his handler.
This particular project will provide seizure-response dogs for people living with epilepsy, greatly increasing their chances of surviving life-threatening episodes that may arise. This project will also raise awareness about SUDEP to encourage further support of individuals living with epilepsy, their families, and their communities.
