Summary

This micro-loans will allow Youth in the rural community of Palo de Lapa, in Leon Nicaragua to benefit economically and nutritionally through training and the provision of 5 Hydroponic growing kits to learn a form of horticulture called hydroponics.Hydroponics is an innovative form of gardening making use of small spaces and water-base plant cultivation. A group of 25 students will benefit through improved nutrition and the ability to grow and sell plant products in local markets.

Challenge

Nicaragua presents severe nutritional problems in the rural communities of the country. Many caused by; the lack of information and proper eating habit, and the predominant disease in the western region of the country that are related to the kidneys. People suffer from, and even die due to infection in those organs, caused by the low consumption of vegetables and water.

Solution

The implement of hydroponics will allow youth in Nicaragua to obtain and income by marketing a healthy and low cost product, while improving their quality life and of those around them. The importance of this project remains in the elimination of hunger and its roots. By providing 25 youth, that represent 25 families, not only with food, but with the knowledge to produce it.

Long-Term Impact

As a long term impact participant will acquire, not only a healthier diet but entrepreneurial skills to develop micro-projects as well. The improvement in their eating habit will gradually reduce the chances of developing certain kidneys diseases, being one of the leading causes of death in the region.
