This microproject will provide a 3-year scholarship to a village girl who has completed secondary school at the top of her class in northern Burkina Faso, making it possible for her to earn a university education. Her education will enable her to gain productive employment and contribute to the health & education of her family and to the development of her community and her country. Without such assistance , she will return to the village and the life of her mother, including forced marriage
What is the issue, problem, or challenge?
Approximately 80 high achieving girls from subsistence farming families graduate from secondary school each year in northern Burkina Faso, assisted by the Lambs Support Girls' Education Project. Without financial help, they return to the village and the life of their mothers, including forced marriages and no chance to escape the cycle of poverty for them, their families and their communities. The project will send a girl like Naadia or Fatimata (see photos) to university next year.
How will this project solve this problem?
The project will support the cost of a university education for a qualified girl whose parents are subsistence farmers in northern Burkina Faso. Her education will enable her to gain productive employment and contribute to the health and education of her family and to the development of her community and her country.
Potential Long Term Impact
Educating girls changes everything. When a girl in Burkina Faso receives an education, she marries later and has fewer children. When she earns an income, she reinvests it in her family, improving her children's health, education and well being, and she contributes to the development of her community and nation. When we invest in girls in Burkina Faso, we empower the next generation to reach their potential as leaders committed to the growth and development of their communities and country.
