Summary

Each week, Daktari welcomes 8 children for an environmental education. When the children return in their village, they share what they learnt at Daktari with their community. The impact in the village is tremendous! All the children are waiting for their turn to come to Daktari. Giving them a Daktari branded pen and bag would make a wider impact in the village. We would also like to sell some bags to raise more funds to cover the cost of education and to spread the word about Daktari.

Challenge

The Limpopo Province is a large part of South Africa's natural resources and cultural heritage, yet it is also the poorest, least educated area of the country with the highest level of poaching activity. The environment, including the wildlife, is terribly affected because of a lack of education and motivation. At Daktari we give the chance to the local community to understand the benefit of protecting the environment and to live in harmony with it while improving their quality of life.

Solution

By welcoming children for a week of environmental education we have a direct impact on them. However, we need to brand our action to extend our impact on the people who can't come to Daktari. Having branded bags and pen, would become a fashion and would help the children to convince the community to have a better attitude toward the protection of the environment.

Long-Term Impact

After spending a week of environmental education at Daktari, the children become aware of the importance of their environment. They now act as role models and encourage their communities to protect nature. Our educational programme has also stimulated passions within lots of children who are now considering working in the ecotourism industry.
