In the 2013-2014, NFTE DC Region brought our entrepreneurship education program to 1,300 students in 29 schools around the Washington, DC area. Thanks in part to your donations on GlobalGiving, we were able to expand our program to 34 schools for the 2014-2015, reaching 1,600 young entrepreneurs in our nation’s capital. New schools that have been onboarded include Gwynn Park High School and Bowie High School in Maryland as well as Annadale High School in Virginia (and several others). NFTE’s innovative and visionary entrepreneurship education not only enables youth to become increasingly engaged in their studies – it empowers them to own their futures. Our program brings relevancy into the classroom and gives students the tools they need to take control of their lives and to develop business and entrepreneurship skills, launching them on a pathway to prosperity.
Students in each NFTE classroom gain access to incredible business mentors and coaches, as well as the classroom resources they are provided. We arrange for classroom lectures from locally grown entrepreneurs, who can share their firsthand experience of building a business and the skills and mindset that it takes. Recently we had some wonderful entrepreneurs visit our new classroom at Bowie High School. The Founder and CEO of Centuria (based in Reston, Virginia), spoke during a class at Bowie to NFTE students, helping urge them to think in an entrepreneurial mindset. It is always special when entrepreneurs take the time to visit our classrooms and speaks to the students.
Each of the new NFTE DC schools will also, at the end of school year, hold a classroom business plan competition. As part of the NFTE curriculum each student must, using the lessons learned throughout the course, formulate a business plan for a product or service they are passionate about. They then pitch their plan to a panel of judges (some of which will be composed of the local entrepreneurs who visit our students) in a classroom competition, with the winners advancing to face each other in the Regional Competition. With 300 new students in the mix this year, the NFTE DC Region will no doubt feature some great new youth businesses. Your donations helped bring our new classrooms to life. Thanks again for your support through the GlobalGiving platform.
