Internet Access and Computer Literacy for Youth

A microproject by Shauri Yako Community Youth Support Centre (SYSC)
Internet Access and Computer Literacy for Youth

Summary

Youth in the slums around Nyeri town live in extreme poverty, with limited access to basic education due to the need to help contribute to family income. This project will allow SYSC to attain 4 additional computers and afford internet connectivity for 24 months. We can then offer local youth computer access, guidance on using computers and the web, access to employment information and networks and vastly improve their chances of employment.

Challenge

The youth served by SYSC live with very few opportunities. Not only do they live in severe poverty, but there is little access to support from charitable or government organizations. SYSC's drop in centre and our programs provide important relief from the risks of street life, from hunger to drugs to prostitution. Girls are particularly vulnerable. By providing computer and internet access and training, we will give youth a valued employment skill and improve their chances of finding work.

Solution

SYSC currently has 4 computers but, as a small charity, cannot afford additional computers or the high costs of internet connectivity ($64/month) needed to run training courses. Through this microproject, we will be able to offer training and provide drop-in access. We will teach youth basic computer software skills important in the workplace, such as word how to use spreadsheets or as well as basic web proficiency so they can access online educational and employment information and network.

Long-Term Impact

This program will compliment other training and supports SYSC provides to youth, such as vocational skills training and assistance in finding employment or starting a business. This project will empower its participants, helping to break the cycle of poverty in a sustainable way. Self-reliant individuals will be able to support their extended families and contribute to building the community.
