Summary

We're raising these funds so we can install electrical wiring in our new facility. We'll use it to power our 5 computers to offer computer skills training to youth. In these slums, many youth do not have the chance to finish school or get basic education, let alone computer skills needed of today's workforce. We have U.S.-based university students arriving this summer to offer computer and music training. We need to complete the wiring before they arrive.

Challenge

Our charity serves impoverished, at-risk youth from 3 slum communities, including many single mothers. Youth lack education, job skills and hope. Earlier this year, we rebuilt our facility in stone to replace our original, unsafe iron sheeting walls. We have a secure new centre with two new toilet stalls. But we still need to raise funds to wire the building so we can hook up our computers and offering computer skills training to youth.

Solution

The project will provide the funds required for materials and electrician services in order to run electricity through our new centre. With electricity, we can hook up 5 computers that SYSC owns and begin to offer computer skills training to youth. Basic computer skills will help youth be more employable and/or to run their own businesses successfully, as so many of those who graduate from our other job skills training programs (e.g, tailoring) go into business for themselves.

Long-Term Impact

Through skills training and assistance in finding employment or starting a business, this project will empower participants - particularly, youth and women - helping to break the cycle of poverty in a sustainable way. Self-reliant individuals will be able to support their extended families and contribute to building the community. Over time, associated problems like drug abuse and prostitution will fall, as will HIV/AIDS rates as participants share information with their families.
