Summary

For many students in under-resourced schools, NFTE's course can lead to new opportunities to learn 21st Century Skills, and to create their own business. NFTE South Florida plans to run a Start Up Summer Business Camp for 25 students, with each participant receiving $400 to start their own business venture.

Challenge

During the recent difficult economic times in America, teens and young adults have experienced a dramatic impact. Young people who do not finish high school in South Florida are even more likely to face prolonged unemployment. For minority students, the dropout rate is above 50% in our region. A Bill and Melinda Gates funded study showed 81% of dropouts want more real world learning opportunities. They said school must be more relevant to their interests, making money, and marketable skills.

Solution

NFTE's 2 week Start Up Summer Camp supports motivated young entrepreneurs as they create their own business ventures. 25 participants are selected who have completed the basic NFTE program during the school year. Under the guidance of a certified NFTE teacher, these students broaden their horizons and strengthen their entrepreneurial ventures with the support of volunteers who lend their guidance with business development and financial advice. Each student receives $400 to launch their business.

Long-Term Impact

By working to keep at-risk students engaged in their school work, NFTE spurs its participants to graduate high school and dare to dream of a brighter future. Whether they pursue higher education, enter the workforce, or start their own business, NFTE instills an entrepreneurial mindset in young people so they can plan for success. Since opening its doors in 2006, NFTE South Florida has reached more than 20,000 students from low-income communities with entrepreneurship education programs.
