This project allows the Mariposa DR Foundation to continually hire local musicians to teach our girls and to get instruments into the hands of girls, who may not otherwise get to opportunity to experience the power of music firsthand.
Music programs are scarce on the North Coast of the Dominican Republic, and many children will never pick up a musical instrument. So far, we have been fortunate to borrow various instruments and our Mariposas have also been very inventive, using recycled trash cans and gallon water bottles as drums. This project will allow the Mariposa DR Foundation to purchase our own instruments.
The funds raised will be used to purchase the instruments needed to continue to make our music program a success and to allow the Mariposa DR Foundation to gives our girls ownership over their music.
By learning to play an instrument the girls will be more focused and responsible. Being a musician enhances time management skills as well as concentration in school. Additionally, the program will connect the Mariposas to their own culture as well as broaden their understanding of cultures around the world. The girls would also have the potential to get a job in their community by performing for both tourists and events.
