Summary

Kelvin loves reading. As Kelvin explains "It helps to teach and motivate me". With English as his favourite subject and his love of reading it's not a surprise he dreams of becoming a teacher when he finishes school. With your help Africa SOMA will cover the costs of Kelvin's four years of high school, giving him the educational foundation to not only change his own life by becoming a teacher but change the lives of his future students. $1086 will cover Kelvin's 4 year secondary education.

Challenge

When asked why he wants to be a teacher Kelvin's love for his family shines through. "Because I want to teach my young brothers and sisters" he told us. Kelvin also aspires to be a pilot although he would like to become a teacher first. How will he achieve this? "I'm going to excel in school." he answers simply. It is clear that with your help the sky truly is the limit for Kelvin. By investing in Kelvin's education you are ensuring he gets a chance to reach his full potential.

Solution

In rural Kenya, where many families have low incomes, it is difficult to send children to high school, yet a high school education is necessary to access many jobs in Kenya. As a result Kelvin and many other children are unable to continue their education without financial support. Never able to realize their full academic potential, these youth are limited in the types of careers they can pursue, reinforcing the cycle. With your help Kelvin will be able to reach his dream of becoming a teacher.

Long-Term Impact

The region surrounding Elangata Wuas has been suffering from increased droughts in recent years which has had a severe impact on a community economically centered around livestock. Livelihood diversity is a key in the region and earning a high school education provides greater potential to access and create jobs. For children in Elangata Wuas the chance to attend high school means a chance to broaden not only their academic horizons but also their job prospects.
