DARE Network provides ongoing Prevention Education and non-medical Addiction Treatment for over 120,000 refugees and migrant workers on the Thai/Burma Border. The refugees remain in the refugee camps, some for more than 30 years. DARE Network has over 70 well trained Addiction Workers and 5 dedicated Core Staff working on these issues. Working conditions are harsh. The scope of our travel is 800 km. The roads are dangerous. This project will help our core staff travel more safely.
During the course of our work DARE's core staff must travel to the refugee camps monthly to deliver supplies, give training, supervise teams, solve problems, monitor funds and evaluate our programs. We have one 5 year old 4x4 truck. The roads are variable from easy to almost impassable in the rainy season (5 months of the year). Our truck is always in danger of falling off the mountain due to the conditions. As well, damage to the truck is expensive in repairs and time off the road.
By outfitting our truck with a strong bumpers on the front, side and back, we feel that we will not only be able to protect the truck but our staff can also travel more safely, knowing that if there should be an accident they are more protected inside the body of the truck. As DARE continues to support the prevention and recovery needs, the communities are owning their own programs. Ensuring they continue to have a place to practice what they have learned and share their skills with others is essential. All natural disasters and weather set people back, but the knowledge and skills remain. DARE Network programs operate on every level at grassroots. These roots are deep and can overcome the physical setback with a little help from you one DARE Centre at a time.
