Greenhouse - For Food and Business

A microproject by American Foundation for Children with AIDS
Greenhouse - For Food and Business

Summary

We have established a greenhouse in Mombasa and it is producing a ton of veggies for families in our programs. Children are gaining weight and are experiencing less sickness due to being healthier. Women are starting businesses! The simple concept of a greenhouse is giving food to people who have suffered from years from a drought.Tomatoes, usually imported to Mombasa due to climate issues, are thriving! We are providing food for those who need it and want to expand this proven solution.

Challenge

Mombasa has been hit hard by lack of rains for years. Gardens were decimated and food costs skyrocketed during the last famine in the Horn of Africa. Mombasa saw food costs rise 500% overnight. Vulnerable children who need to eat frequently in order to take strong medicine to combat the HIV they carry are the first to suffer. Women caring for these children are often looking for ways to provide for their families but have no income to start a business. And the cycle of poverty continues...

Solution

We will provide a greenhouse which will produce food difficult to grow in an area that is high in humidity but which receives very little rain. HIV+ children and their guardians, desperately needing to eat well in order to take their medicines, will have the opportunity to purchase nutritious veggies at subsidized prices. If they are not able to do so, they will receive it free of charge. Some veggies will be resold by women starting small businesses, helping break the cycle of poverty.

Long-Term Impact

HIV+ children and their guardians will receive huge benefits including: much needed vegetables, training in how to prepare nutritious meals, training in how to grow food with little water, funds from food they resell (they have the opportunity to purchase some veggies at hugely discounted prices so they can resell and start a small business), savings from food consumed from the garden, and the knowledge that they can take care of themselves during a drought. 200 children will benefit.
