Summary

Giving these two children this week of environmental education will stimulate them towards a brighter future for them as well as their whole community. We educate them in ways to protect their environment, job opportunities in eco-tourism, politeness etc. then they go back to the villages and share their new knowledge with friends/family...

Challenge

Limpopo represents a large area of South Africa's natural resources and cultural heritage, yet it is known to be the poorest, least educated area. It has the highest poaching activity. Schools are overcrowded, so most of the students miss out on the basics of education. We want to give Katlego and Koketso the chance to break out of this circle.

Solution

Daktari welcomes underprivileged children on the game reserve for a full week of environmental education. Volunteers teach one-on-one lessons about wildlife, conservation, job opportunities in game reserves, general skills and social issues. After their week at Daktari, the children are very concerned about the protection of the environment and share their knowledge and enthusiasm with the community, which helps them towards a brighter future.

Long-Term Impact

After spending a week of environmental education at Daktari, the children become aware of the importance of their environment. They now act as role models and encourage their communities to protect nature. Our educational programme has also stimulated passions within lots of children who are now working in the ecotourism industry.
