The purpose of these scholarships is to give an opportunity to a student who otherwise is not able to access English education, due to financial constraints and their families not understanding the value of education.
Approximately 1/4 of our English students are too poor to afford study resources. This makes their learning experience ineffective, and also results in embarrassment among their peers. Additionally, they are more likely to stop studying at our organisation if they don't have access to study materials, which also increases their likelihood of dropping out of school.
It costs just $14.65 to provide one student with a scholarship for a year. They receive a shoulder bag made by our graduated sewing students that is made from rice bags and second hand fabric. They also receive a textbook, pencil sharpener and eraser every term, along with a pen and pencil every month and a notebook every two months. Their parents sign a contract with HHA to ensure they are committed to their children's study and won't stop them from studying to work.
Our students will have an opportunity at English education they otherwise wouldn't have had. This, combined with being around positive role models, will increase their chances at having a good education. They will then go on to lead fulfilling lives, escaping the poverty cycle.
