Summary

This program will start the first orphan care program designed to give orphans food, shelter and skills training in Northern Nigeria. Instead of Orphans being abandoned on the street, left to fend for themselves or if they are lucky government housing where they will not receive an education, this program will partner orphans with willing business leaders to provide them with a home, food to eat and skills training so they can fend for themselves and their family one day.

Challenge

This program will give Orphans a home with willing families who can afford to house, cloth and feed them while through a rigorous application phase find them mentors willing to teach them in a trade so they can one day hold down jobs. The problem of Orphans being left to fend for themselves with little hope and often faced with death unless they turn to crime will begin to be solved by creating an avenue and example of how community leaders can transform these individuals into leaders.

Solution

Leadership Initiatives will create a pilot program with 24 volunteer businesses who are willing to house, feed and cloth an orphaned family often consisting of two or more siblings. These children will then go to school and when they come of age will then be trained in a skilled job by their foster parents. Leadership Initiatives in conjunction with the Nigerian government will monitor these families to make sure each child is receiving the best possible care so they will have a future.

Long-Term Impact

Develop independent profit-generating businesses that serve as models for growth in surrounding communities. Project beneficiaries fill voids in the local economy while improving their families' health, education and financial stability. Previous leaders have sent their brothers, sisters and children to school, helped invest in new businesses within the community, offered new services to community members such as the disabled, establishing infrastructure for the future growth of Nigeria.
