Emergency Shelter For American Mothers & Children

A microproject by Pathways to Safety International
Emergency Shelter For American Mothers & Children

Summary

In Europe and many other countries, only citizens of that country are allowed for free into domestic violence shelters. This is because their governments reimburse them for the women and children that are only their citizens. Other nationalities have to pay for the shelter. Battered American women fleeing abuse are often on the street with their children and don't have any money. Average cost per night is 36 ($50). This project will fund 100 shelter nights in 2014, 25 families for 4 nights each.

Challenge

Battered American mothers seeking shelter with their children overseas don't have any money, but shelters require payment if they are not citizens of the foreign country. This project will create a shelter fund for desperate American mothers and their children. Cost for shelter averages 36 per night ($50). This project will provide 100 shelter nights in 2014, 25 families with 4 nights each.

Solution

By providing shelter nights, battered American mothers and their children will have a safe temporary place to stay while they work with one of our case managers for a longer term solution. The 100 shelter nights this project provides will give 25 American mothers and their children 4 nights in a shelter in 2014. This is an invaluable component of our global safety net for Americans abused and in crisis overseas.

Long-Term Impact

The project serves 500 women per year empowering them to find alternatives to a life of violence so their children grow up in violence free homes with their self-esteem in tact with the hope of stopping the cycle of violence in future generations. Getting into a safe shelter immediately after fleeing violence will enable one of our case manager to work with the victim for a longer term solution.
