Summary

This project will provide radios and batteries to hundreds of students who are forced to stay home because of school closures due to the Ebola epidemic. The radios and batteries will help them participate in the radio learning program implemented by the Ministry of Education to help children continue their school work at home and progress educationally.

Challenge

In Sierra Leone, because of the Ebola crisis, 1.7 million children have no access to school, per UNICEF. One of the implications of Ebola is that all schools and colleges are closed indefinitely. The government is providing an alternative method of learning via radio broadcasts. Unfortunately, hundreds of families do not own a radio or are not able to afford the on-going cost of batteries.

Solution

We provide radios and batteries to hundreds of Sierra Leone families so that their children can participate in the radio learning program and help them keep pace with classwork they are missing out on due to school closures. Pupils will have on-going access to a radio to participate in the learning period.

Long-Term Impact

This will help hundreds of children keep their academic dreams alive and reduce idleness, crime and stress from the Ebola epidemic.
