Youth at village level need to be aware of Climate change in Sri Lanka. 25 youth representatives will be trained as trainers for sustainable leaders in combatting climate change. Will conduct 4 day residential programme on leadership skills as messengers on sustainable adaptaton methods like using local farming systems, energy saving, tree planting, encourage green actions like garbage free environment, having butterfly/ Bee gardens as polinators for food security and to increase bio diversity.
Low level of knowledge on Climate change issues among community and continuation of chemical treated farming systems leads into more health and environmental issues like cancer, kidney deceases, and loss of insects and biodiversity. People have forgotten traditional seeds and farming systems and more unsustainable practices are common which leads into land slides, floods and droughts. So we will create awareness on these issues and will encourage more sustainable solutions.
Youth will be great messengers as change makers. They will learn about climate change and once they are empowered more sustainable actions will be taken and its like a ripple effect as these will be trainers for other local community members. Specially a huge need is there for moving towards organic/traditional farming practices to adopt on climate change. Passing knowledge on moving away from chemical farming will reduce more health issues we have due to contaminated water and soil.
Once we trained the youth they will be members of ECO-V youth grean leaders team. So they will get continouse support from us beyond the project. As a condition of training these 25 trainers must train as least another 25 youth in local community once they go back. We are tragetting positive ripple effects atleast among 500 cmmunity members. Establishing organic home gardens, Bee and Butterfly areas are more sustainable in long run when this knowledge is passed into kids and youth in society
