Hundreds of families are learning entrepreneurial skills & improved farming practices at Self-Help's training center, but some youth and adult attendees have become ill from drinking impure water during training sessions. This project will install a concrete tower, water tank and CTI-8 water purification system to replace the rotting wooden structure that has become a breeding grounds for moquitoes and bacteria, and ensure staff & trainees can teach & learn in a safe and healthy environment.
The SHI Training Center is a location where water chlorinators are built and promoted, yet the center does not have clean water available. Staff and trainees have had illness issues caused by the untreated water available. On one of the training days, one of the micro-credit women went to get a cup of water and found mosquito's larva -- now we know why we all have had frequent parasite issues result whenever we go to see the doctor.
Replacing the wooden water tower with a concrete tower with a ladder on the side will enable us to check the water tank periodically for routine maintenance and to install a CTI-8 Chlorinator, the same water purification system that we promote in rural communities as an affordable means of eliminating bacteria that cause waterborne diseases. The new, larger water tank will also facilitate the storage and treatment of enough clean water for all of our trainees to consume on training days.
Self-Help International will reach thousands of trainees with the educational programming. The participants will be able to use their education to become self-sustaining, and see improvement in their quality of life. Family healthcare education coupled with increased income leads to preventative care and in turn, healthier children and a more productive workforce. Sustainable farming and energy efficient technology education will decrease deforestation and have positive environmental impacts.
