Summary

Looking for a valuable gift idea this Christmas? With DAKTARI you can sponsor an underprivileged child on behalf of a loved one. For $175 you and your gift recipient will give a disadvantaged child the opportunity to attend 5 days of educational activities in January. For donations of $175 or more, we will send a personalized gift certificate for your loved one, send them an SMS when the child arrives at Daktari, as well as a report after the child leaves. Smaller donations are also accepted :)

Challenge

Limpopo is known to be one of the poorest, least educated areas of South Africa. In schools, there are often more than 50 students per class. Only 48% of school leavers pass their Matriculation exam (graduate). Unemployment and poverty play a huge role in the destruction of the environment, with locals looking to poaching to support their families. Because safaris are privileges reserved for the middle-classes, locals do not understand the importance of preserving their precious environment.

Solution

DAKTARI educates local, underprivileged children to care for their environment through the medium of a wildlife orphanage. Our mission is to: Encourage compassion for animals which will urge the children to appreciate and care for wildlife Ensure that the children understand the economic importance of preserving their environment Create awareness of the job opportunities available in eco-tourism Build self-confidence and an overall desire to learn

Long-Term Impact

Teachers report significant progress in the students who attend DAKTARI, such as increased concentration, a greater motivation to speak up in class, an increase in politeness and self-esteem and a higher pass rate at the end of the year. DAKTARI students have stopped the formation of hunting parties and have called Nature Conservation to rescue wild animals near to their homes. Many of our former students are now working in eco-tourism and are seen as role models in their communities.
