Challenge

Children affected and/or infected by AIDS in Zimbabwe are in a very difficult situation because they lack the funds with which to purchase food, pay rent, purchase clothes, and pay school fees. This project will provide 250 children with chickens, roosters, husbandry and gardening training, and seeds so they can start their own flocks, providing their families with food, training and an income for the future.

Solution

We will deliver four mature laying chickens and one adult rooster to each of 50 orphan families (approximately 250 children) along with training on care and basic veterinary and husbandry skills and seeds for a garden. With the proper training and supervision, these families will grow their flocks while benefiting from the eggs they eat and sell. As their flocks grow, they can also sell chickens, starting businesses. We are moving these orphans out of the poverty cycle!

Long-Term Impact

As the orphaned children learn to care for their flocks, they also receive budgeting and marketing training so that they can develop small businesses in order to become self-reliant. These practices and lessons are passed down to younger generations, helping them, as well. In time, entire families and communities break the cycle of poverty as they move away from needing outside help to being able to provide for themselves.
