Teaching at JAAGO Foundation

At JAAGO we work hard to provide access to quality education for all; but often in Bangladesh recruiting and retaining quality teachers can prove tough. As a non-profit organization with limited resources, JAAGO struggles to compete with larger private schoolswho are able to pay higher salaries and provide additional resources.Furthermore, at JAAGO we cater for the underprivileged children of Bangladesh who can often be challenging to handle in the classroom as they have little understanding of rules and means of respect.

These issues can make teaching at JAAGO challengingand demanding, and therefore JAAGO is working to provide opportunities for our teachers to develop. Through support, information and discussion JAAGO’s teachers will be able to provide quality education to the impoverished children of Bangladesh.

Teacher Training

In order to provide this quality education to our students, we organised a comprehensive teacher development program to train and support our teachers.

This program was facilitated by income generated through Global Giving, to provide a training session on the professional development of teachers facilitated by SPEED (Services for Professional Education and Enterprise Development).SPEED is an adult education and training centre, with 9 years’ experience in providing international-standard training programs to working professionals. The funds generated meant that JAAGO Foundation was able to provide 30 teachers from different branches with an eight day training course involving:

  • Classroom Management and Control
  • Understanding how to increase discipline and why children act disruptively
  • Motivating children in the classroom
  • Strategies for Classroom Management
  • How to praise children so as to motivate them
  • Professionalism
  • Characteristics of an Ideal Teacher
  • Creating a Positive Learning Experience
  • Methods of Assessing the Learners

The raised funds supported this program which had a significant impact on the performance of not only our teachers, but also our students.

Impact

Since the launch of the program, we have seen significant improvements in our teachers’ motivation and engagement with students. Since the training, the 30 teachers have implemented new teaching techniques within the classrooms and are becoming much more creative with their lesson plans.

Previous to the training session, teachers lacked motivation and incentives; however since the SPEED program was launched our teachers have become more imaginative and driven to provide quality education to our students. Furthermore our studentsare more engaged in the classroom and inspired to learn.

We asked Zahinatul Islam how he thought the training had influenced his teaching: “As a newbie in teaching, SPEED training really helped me a lot to sharpen up my skills as a teacher. The training taught me about class management, teaching techniques and how to give lectures in an effective way.”
