Summary

The Autism Film Program is a 2-week program in which 38-50 participants with autism, and up to 12 siblings, will make a 35-minute film, where they will learn the marketable skills of filmmaking, each leaving with a film credit, and an addition to their resume. It is critical for the well being of the participants as well as the peace of mind of the parents to have Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) trained therapists and aides on site to assist.

Challenge

Individuals with autism sometimes need extra support when there has been a change in routine. The start of the film program will be a major change in routine and the support of these therapists will be very valuable. The trained staff will help the children with transitions, social interactions and help them keep focus on their assigned task.

Solution

Providing ABA trained therapists to assist staff and volunteers will be beneficial to multiple parties: the individuals with autism primarily as well as their parents, as having on-site behavioral therapists will provide peace of mind and comfort.

Long-Term Impact

Creating a film is a monumental effort for any group, but for those with ASD, vital skills must be mastered, including cooperation, negotiation, listening, and taking direction. They will be introduced to animation, set design, script-writing, acting, prop/set building, wardrobe, make-up and budgeting. They will learn the marketable skills of filmmaking and leave with a film credit and an addition to their resume. For many, this will be their first experience of job training.
