Martha Zuniga lives in Rumira, a foothill village in the Peruvian Andes, where job opportunities are limited, and sometimes she and her husband, Carlos, struggle to support their three children. I heard about her last month after making a donation to GlobalGiving’s Project of the Month Club .

A year ago Martha joined Awamaki, a nonprofit that teams local artisans with international design volunteers to bring their crafts to market worldwide. She joined an Awamaki knitting group, and after impressing staff, she was hired as Awamaki’s first in-house designer! 

Awamaki is helping Martha learn business skills, including using spreadsheets, the Internet, and email to plan her sales. Martha says she now feels “more secure” with income from her business… ”and when I look at my fellow knitters from Rumira, I see these changes in their homes also."
