Dear Friends and Well Wishers,

Apologies for the delay in getting back to you.

Since end of last month, the school is closed for summer vacations and would re-open in the beginning of June, which would mark the start of the new academic session 2014-15.

A further level meeting is to take place with the District Education Officer (Kanchipuram District) which was held up due to general elections in India. A formal memorandum of understanding would be entered into between SNS Foundation and the office of the District Education Officer so as to ensure maxiumum cooperation among stakeholders. A copy of the MoU is also attached.

In the last report, list of items to be purchased for proper equipping of the school's nursing lab was shared. Two quotations for all items to be purchased has been collected is attached as a mark of transparency in the Foundation's dealings with the funds received from Global Giving. Efforts to Improve Quality of Skills Training

Interaction With Nursing Faculty of Project School
Interaction With Nursing Faculty of Project School

Dear Friends,

This is the first report for Project Hygiene & Skills for 1000 Girls in Chennai, India for 2014 and I take this oppportunity to wish all our benefactors and their families a VERY HAPPY NEW YEAR - may we live upto your expectations during this year and we together are able to make a desirable impact on the lives of students studying in Govt. Girls Senior Secondary School, Azghesan Nagar, Chengalpet, our project site.

Today's report talks about the efforts initiated towards one of the project objectives i.e. improvement in quality of current level of training delivered in two trades - Nursing and Dress Making. The area of Chengalpet is about 45Kms from India's southern metroplitan city of Chennai, in the state of Tamil Nadu. The Tamil Nadu Govt. has made it mandatory for schools to offer options of vocational training in the last two years of schooling (Grades XI and XII), so that students are better preapared to enter the job market. It is an initiative to promote employability.

DRESSMAKING COURSE: The laboratory teaching dress making does not have anything more than few hand operated machines. Hence, in order to ensure that the course curriculum is market aligned and the laboratory meets requirements of modern-day teaching, SNS Foundation approached the Chennai office of Apparel Training and Design Centre (ATDC), an autonomous pan-India body under the Ministry of Textiles, Govt. of India. SNS Foundation already has a working relationship with the Head Office of ATDC in Gurgaon where the Foundation too has its head office. Project Leader Damayanti Bhowmik met with Ms. P. Viji, Principal, ATDC, Chennai on December 18th to discuss the option of ATDC Chennai coming in as a technical/knowledge partner to improve the quality of dress making course at the project school. The proposal now rests with the Regional Office of ATDC, South India for approval. Details of mail communication exchanged between Ms. Viji and Ms. Damayanti are attached.

NURSING COURSE: The Nursing faculty at the project school has a M.Sc (Nursing) and thus adequately qualified to conduct the training. However, the laboratory does not even have a proper hospital bed to teach prospective nurses the skill of bed making let alone the use of a dummy cross section of human body to teach physiology and anatomy. In this regard, a key project personnel, Ms. Saral who herself is a trained staff nurse met with the school's nursing instructor and has drawn up list of one-time assets and recurring materials that should ideally be present in a nursing training classrrom. The list drawn up is attached. The project funds are to be used for purchase of items listed in the .xlsx document. Now we are in the process of collecting quotations prior to making of the actual purchase.

By the next report due in 3 months time we sincerely hope to be sharing with you news of the partnership with ATDC coming through and the nursing classroom dawning a new look.

Once again our heartfelt thanks to our benefactors both for their support and their trust in us.
