Change A Life Uganda

Our mission is to change the lives of the children and their families in Uganda through education, health care, and income generating projects. ChangeALife Uganda is working in Uganda to improve the lives of orphaned and disadvantaged children and their families in rural Migyera and in semi-urban Nabbingo. We focus primarily on children, the catalyst for change and the hope of the future, with 275 students in our growing educational sponsorship program; our goal is 500. Mission

The students are from poor families, many would not be able to attend school because of school fees, nor would they receive quality education, which is available only at good private schools. Our students are selected based on need, interest in learning and leadership skills. Students completing the university in the next few years will feed back into our program as teachers, nurses, social workers, etc. Although ChangeALife Uganda is based in New Jersey, we are firmly rooted in Uganda as Change A Life Uganda Foundation with Fr. Lawrence Kizito Kimbowa as Director and inspiration behind ChangeALife Uganda and their five member Ugandan team. As a child Fr. Lawrence was separated from his family during the 1980's civil conflict in Uganda. A couple in Chicago sponsored his education from grade three through the priesthood. Education changed his life and is the gift he promises to bring to the children of Uganda.

Programs

Education Program: In Nabbingo, through educational sponsorships students attend various good primary, secondary, technical schools and the University. Students in Migyera attend St. Lawrence Primary School, which is a public school and accepts children of all religions. ChangeALife Uganda at a very modest cost has transformed the school from a substandard rural school of 90 students and 4 teachers in 2007 to over 500 students and 20 teachers in 2011. In this short time, St. Lawrence School has become the 2nd best school in the Nagasangola district. Twenty students have graduated and now attend secondary school. Improvements include lunch for all students although only 160 are sponsored, a new dormitory, a kitchen and food storage facility, electricity in each classroom, a three acre garden, a library, a new classroom building, new art, music and sports programs, a computer lab started in June 2011, a mimeograph machine and housing for four teachers. Because of the expanded student census and the goal to make our school the best school in Uganda, the needs are many: more teachers, land, an administration building, a dining room, library and dormitory expansion, teacher housing, technology, textbooks, etc. The water situation in this semiarid area is desperate. In 2010 funds from our Quarters for Water program purchased five water harvesting tanks and begin the process to bring a permanent solution to the school and health center. Quarters for Water continues to raise funds for a deep well, piping and large holding tank. The organization also partners with schools in the U.S. to provide opportunities for cross-cultural learning and communications through shared letter writing, drawings, photos, videos, internet communications and a unique student microfinance program. Income generation: A microfinance program funds small business and agricultural opportunities for our parents and children. Our women are trained in basket and jewelry making. The products are shipped to the US and sold with the profits benefiting the women and St. Lawrence School. Agriculture is not the traditional microfinance model; however it is the primary work of 85% of the country. Our program expands this capability through crop farming and rearing livestock that are later sold through local market development opportunities. This program targets the families of our sponsored children. Healthcare - HIV/AIDS Proposal: A partially built Migyera Health Center opened in August 2009 with a nurse's aide providing minimal services to a population of 5,000. Now it is nearing completion, but it lacks equipment, supplies and medical services. In Nabbingo, a small level three center serves a community of 10,000. Nabbingo has the third highest rate of HIV infection in the country at 7.4%. Neither site offers HIV care. Two of our mothers died in 2009 of AIDS because they were unable to access care. With that in mind, 2011 brought a small step to launch a pilot HIV patient sponsorship program for $500 year for medication, nutritional support, CD4 testing and transportation to the clinic. 16 parents are benefitting as well as 14 other HIV+ clients from Nabbingo. However, for the long term, our vision is to provide a holistic approach to the management of health and HIV, to equip both centers with medicine, medical equipment, staff and supplies, to offer medical and psychological care, orphan and vulnerable children support, financial interventions and HIV prevention programs in the schools and community.
