This Season's School Activities Were Fully Enjoyed

Christmas performance
Christmas performance

The last three months were full of school activities, excursions, Christmas performances, and a visit to the hospital for vaccines. School examinations were written before the Christmas celebrations began, and the school enjoyed a two week break before the second term began in January 2015.

Class 5 and 6 pupils enjoyed an excursion to a brewery where they learned how soft drinks are produced and the school choir visited the Hilton Hotel where they took pictures. The parents enjoyed a Christmas performance by the pupils and teachers that included dance, music, nativity drama, rhymes and poems, a fashion show, arts and crafts display, and a journalism club news presentation. Children from 0-5 years old visited the District hospital in Soa to receive their polio vaccinations.

Our volunteers were very instrumental in making the school and Christmas activities successful. They also played a very important role for the children and teachers at our school during the school year. Several Christmas gifts were donated to the children by our friends and volunteers.

We are forever grateful to YOU for support of us through this GlobalGiving project. With your help, we are positively changing the lives of children in Cameroon.

Alfred Completes The Race With a Respectable Time

Very competitive race
Very competitive race

The much awaited Standard Chartered international marathon in Nairobi was held on Sunday 26th October 2014 along the streets of Kenya’s capital city. The event which attracted more than 25,000 runners from all over the world was in its 12th edition since it began. The Standard Chartered Marathon event raises money for “Seeing is Believing” campaign.

Every year several underprivileged runners from Kenya use the event as a stepping stone to the international road racing events.  By so doing some of these runners secure themselves better opportunities in athletic careers. The event attracts several sponsors from around the world based on the fact that Kenya is known for long distance running. Those runners who are lucky to excel during the marathon event get sponsored immediately. However, competition in Kenya in long distance running is extremely high.

Alfred, one the underprivileged runners that we support together, participated in this year’s Standard Chartered Marathon in Nairobi. Like many others, he was hoping to finish among the top ten in order to secure a major sponsorship. However despite being with the leaders until the 38th Kilometer of the 42Km race, he fell back from the pack of leaders in the closing kilometers.  Being a hard working athlete who never gives up, Alfred managed to complete the race in a good time of 2hrs 24min. At high altitude, that was a very respectable time.

Thank you so much for supporting Alfred with registration, travel and accommodation finances during the marathon event. Alfred will be resuming training in about two weeks in readiness for other upcoming local road races in Kenya.

With YOUR on-going support,we are confident that he and other runners that we support will even do better in upcoming races.nnThanks again for your support.

No More Talk of Child Marriage at 14 years Old

Elizabeth
Elizabeth

As a team, we feel really good about a recent victory that we accomplished with your support.

Elizabeth lost her mother when she was eleven years of age.  Her father, a farmer, was finding it difficult to buy seeds to sustain his small scale farming business. A tribal man from Moyamba learned of his predicament and wanted to exploit the situation. He opted to help her father with some seeds.  He asked in exchange that Elizabeth later be given in marriage to him.

When Elizabeth became 12 years old, the man showed up to remind the father of their arrangement concerning Elizabeth. Joshua, our local Director, happened to be around at that time.  He reports as follows:

I saw the father looking distressed and asked, “You are not usually like this, what is the matter?”

The father opened up and told me about the problem he was facing. “I do not have money to cover Elizabeth's fees and related school expenses".  I am already in debt.  What should I do?”

I suggested to the father that he first take Elizabeth to her Aunt Kadiatu. As an organization, we proceeded to take care of Elizabeth fees / related expenses and paid for her school uniforms and school materials.

Elizabeth is now 14 years old and in Form 3. No more talk of marrying at 14 years old.

Elizabeth wants to be a lawyer when she grows. She likes English Language and Social Studies. She is very friendly and respectful. She cooks very well and is very hospitable to her Aunty Kadiatu. She is a good listener.

Child marriage is still an unfortunate reality in Africa!  According to the International Center For Research on Women, up to 44% of girls in Sierra Leone get married before the age of 18!

Thanks to your support we were able to make a huge difference in Elizabeth's life.  Our intervention enabled her to escape from the unfortunate threat of child marriage. Now she is developing herself, furthering her education and will be better able to support her family in the future.

Together we changed the course of Elizabeth's life.  Your involvement and support made this possible.  Thanks so much.

Today is a good day!  The world is a better place - thanks to YOU!

Elizabeth is staying in school - no child marriage
