Ebola Awareness and Cleansing / Health Supplies

Here a quick update on what we have been able to do so far with your support.

In partnership with Door of Hope, we embarked on a door-to-door Ebola Prevention campaign in the Upper Mellon Street and Upper Beccle Street Community (Wellington / Freetown, Sierra Leone) on the 10th of August 2014.   The campaign had a dual focus because we realized that the community needed both information and also the supplies to help keep themselves safe - soap for washing of hands, Dettol for disinfecting water (added to water in buckets when taking baths).

  1. Ebola Awareness – ensure the community had information about the deadly Ebola virus.  The team shared information on preventive steps that community members could take to keep themselves safe from infection.
  2. Distribution of health / cleansing items.  The team distributed soap to 238 adults, youths and children.  98 bottles of Dettol disinfectant were given to family heads / heads of households.    This was in direct response to the expressed need for assistance in this area.

The beneficiaries expressed their thanks to GlobalGiving donors for caring so much and helping to ensure that they are safe at this difficult time in their history.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for Health Workers Update: We received a 2nd and larger batch of supplies - see photo.  We are currently awaiting a final set of coveralls which should arrive today, Monday.

We anticipate that our first air shipment of a very large box should leave Tennessee on Tuesday August 19th.

I sent the photos of the PPE supplies that we have acquired so far to the Chief Medical Officer in Sierra Leone.  On Saturday, I talked with him on the phone with and he was very appreciative of what we have done so far.  He sent me a follow up text message where he described our gesture so far as "tremendous"!  He confirmed a definite, on-going need for equipment and I requested an updated wish list.

It is because of YOUR support that we have been able to make such significant progress - meeting the most important, expressed needs.

It is truly heart-warming and exciting to be a part of stopping this epidemic.

Your support is making a difference!  Thanks so much!

Desperate Situation - Health Workers Quitting Because of Inadequate Personal Protective Equipment

Coveralls
Coveralls

We wish to say a very special "thank you" to YOU for supporting the global efforts to stop the Ebola epidemic.  From reports that we have received, the citizens in Sierra Leone, Liberia and Cameroon are very appreciative of your concern and support.  Thanks so much.

Her are a couple updates on the local situation in Sierra Leone.

  • Sadly, another doctor passed away yesterday, Thursday - see story here.
  • China-aided emergency humanitarian anti-Ebola medical materials have been airlifted to Sierra Leone - Read more

Stark Reality: Unfortunately, we have reliably heard that health workers have been staying away from work because they do not feel safe - with little or inadequate protective equipment.  Their absence from work is affecting other patients who may be sick for other reasons. In other words, there is still a dire need for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

We are together thankfully responding to this desperate need.  The protective gear that we are providing is literally life-saving!

Thanks to YOUR support, we have ordered a wide range of supplies (PPE) - see list below).  Yesterday, Thursday, some of these supplies (some coveralls and some nose / mouth masks - see included photos) arrived at our office in Tennessee.  More supplies are expected to arrive today, Friday and Monday, next week. We plan to air ship the items by DHL (the fastest method) early next week.  We will provide another update and photos next week showing the shipment - 1 very large box.

  • Coveralls - whole body
  • Mouth / Nose masks
  • Boot  / shoe covers
  • Gloves
  • Goggles
  • Hoods

This will help provide the needed protecting for our brave health workers.

A Busy Summer - Full of Progress

New classroom construction
New classroom construction

It’s been a busy summer – full of progress so far.  To close off the year, we had our year-end exams. The class 6 pupils took the public exams which will enable them to move into Secondary School. They all passed and the school scored 100%.

It has been one month since we closed school for the summer holidays.  Despite that, we are still very busy with different activities in school. We have started the summer program, so far close to 50 pupils are undergoing remedial learning, and last week, they had the opportunity to visit the French Cultural Centre and learn some of the activities they carried out in Cameroon. They watched some films, played games, listened to songs and toured the entire centre.

The other good news is that, we started building the permanent structure at school. Since 2009, the classrooms have been temporary structures.  Partly due to your contribution and support, next academic year which will begin in September 1st 2014, we will have new classrooms.

We are more than grateful for all the opportunities our children are getting both academically and in extra curriculum activities. The chance to stay in school, learn and participate in several activities has been achieved only because of your recurring donations towards their education.  Thanks so much for your kind assistance
