Families were fed!

The past few months have been a flurry of activity at Burbank Temporary Aid Center.  In addition to the 'regular' food we distribute, we also gave out holiday foods for both Thanksgiving and Christmas.

But holiday foods can be expensive - especially when you are buying and distributing over 1,000 turkeys between the two holidays!  Some years we have actually run short.  But this year, with the funds donated through GlobalGiving and other donations, there were plenty of turkeys to go around.

Holiday traditions are important in every family, especially during the holidays.  The smells of the meal as it cooks, as well as the food and family help make and remember happy  memories.  By providing all of the fixin's for a traditional holiday meal, families don't have to rely on soup kitchens for thier holiday meal.  They can continue creating their own family traditions.

As we come to the close of 2014, I am grateful for your support, which has allowed BTAC to help those in need.

Thank you, and Happy New Year!

We did it!

Once again, and with your help, Burbank Temoprary Aid Center was able to provide gifts for more than 1,000 children and youth.  Thank you!

The GlobalGiving donations were used to purchase gift cards, sports equipment, etc. for teens.  Each year, providing gifts for teens is a big challenge.  We see donations of many Barbies and Tonka Trucks, Candyland and Chutes and Ladders games come in - all for younger kids.  But gift for teens, well, it is too often an after-thought.

On the second day of our gift distribution, I received a frantic call from the coordinator, "We are out of everything for teens!  What do I do?"  Using donations received through GlobalGiving and other donors, we were able to restock the shelves and ensure everyone had a gift.

Although the kids are happy to have presents on Christmas morning, I honestly think the parents are most grateful.  I can't imagine how it feels to worry about just putting food on the table, let alone providing holiday gifts.  Peer pressure, television ads, etc. create high expectations.  Many parents just don't have the means to meet them.  But through Santa's Room, they have the help they need.

Thank you for making the holidays brighter for many children, and for easing the burden on thier parents.  I hope knowing this, makes your holidays brighter, as well.

Happy New Year!

Homeless line up for lunches

Each day at about 10 a.m., a group of homeless folks begin to gather in front of Burbank Temporary Aid Center (BTAC).  Slowly, the gathering evolves in to a line, extending around the corner.  This friendly gathering has become a visual reminder of how many people are homeless in the Burbank commnity, and how BTAC is the place they turn for help.

At 10:30 a.m., the door to BTAC's pantry opens up. One by one, each person in line recieves a sack lunch and his/her choice of a variety of fruits, salads, pizza, sweets, etc.  Each one is greeted by name, with a smile.  Food is not the only thing important for a person's well-being.  Sometimes the kind word and smile athat accompanies the food is just as important.

The funds donated for this project ensure that BTAC can provide that daily sustenance. This lunch will often be their only  meal for the day.  So we try to include plenty of items - fruit, something sweet and something salty, a bottle of water and at least one sandwich.  Your monetary donations, coupled food donations, ensure the lunches are hearty and tasty.
