The Dounia Project aims at creating a safe and nurturing space where students from different urban areas around the world can complete their homework and participate in a set of extracurricular activities during non-school hours, which will allow them to develop the necessary skills to compete in an increasingly globalized world. DP's overall goal is to create a global network of programs where young people can interconnect with each other, exchange their ideas and find ways to make their world a better place.

Programs

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION - SPRING 2012 THREE LOCATIONS: CASABLANCA, MOROCCO, NEW YORK CITY (DIFFERENT LOCATIONS), AND EUREKA, CALIFORNIA GOAL: To create a safe space where high school students can voice their opinions, increase their academic achievement, and interconnect with youth around the world through an online forum. OBJECTIVES: P Participants acquire a 21st century skill set (includes: critical thinking skills, knowledge of new technologies & multimedia tools, global perspective on social issues, and communication skills) P Participants develop personal skills (self-confidence, self-esteem, problem-solving skills, decision-making skills, and team-building skills) P Participants acquire participatory skills (advocacy, community development, global collaboration, youth empowerment, and global citizenship) P Participants increase academic achievement (homework help and language skills) P Participants are prepared for adulthood (college prep, resume and cover letter design, and professional development) ACTIVITIES: (Activities are subject to change according to the need of each location and group of students) Safe Space Workshops: a set of workshops on different local and global issues discussed and debated among participants. Using google +, participants communicate with their peers in other location to implement collaborative service-projects to address the issues discussed. These projects can be video projects, designs, blogs or any other medium. Homework Help: sessions to help participants with their homework. Language Lessons: a set of workshops in different languages to help increase participants' language skills. The workshops are interactive activities using movies, music, and blogging. STAFF: NYC: partner organization staff will be trained to facilitate workshops under the supervision of Zayn Abaakil & Kristin Wagner (DP program staff, NY) CA: school staff will be trained to facilitate workshops supervised by Bonny Vosu (DP program staff, California) Casablanca, Morocco: College students from Ben M'Sick University will provide workshops to high school students under the supervision of Loubna Rais (DP Program Director, Casablanca)
