Here are pictures of some of our dear equine residents at Spirit Acres Farm that are getting up in age. Like us, age comes with age related health issues. Pocahontas, a mini horse, will be 35 years old this year. Along with caring for her aging joints and hooves, she needs medicine to manage Cushing’s disease. Equine Cushing’s disease is one of the most common diseases of horses greater than 15 years of age. One of the symptoms in horses with Cushing's disease can be easily recognized by their coarse, wavy coat that often fails to shed out in the summer. In the photo, her friend Laura helps her out with a personal grooming session.
Black Jack is a retired rodeo horse. He was quite a showman in his day. None of his riders managed to stay on for their 7 second ride.
Our herd of 7 mini’s represents 3 generations. They are a true family in activity and life.
All of our horses, regardless of age, need regular dental care. This is a real challenge to provide proper care for some 40 horses at $150 each. We thank all who share our love and concern and support our work.

We, here at the farm, would like to say thank you to those who contribute to our medical needs through Global Giving’s Medical Needs for Horses Program. A special thank you goes out to those who are recurring donors. We count on them for supplements we must have on hand weekly, such as Thyroid L, Pergolide tablets, anti-inflammatory and needed sedatives. In addition, we must develop a monthly protocol for one of our special equine friends, Spirit, who is in need of joint support therapy. Spirit was an abandoned newborn when she came to us. She has been an inspiration and favorite to many. Veterinarians are suggesting an injectable prescription for joint support at a cost of 100 a month after the initial dose of $400 to get this special horse on sound legs. She has brought such joy and humor to the farm, we in turn would like her to feel her best and continue to delight us all. Here are some photos of Spirit, one of our success stories.

We are so pleased and grateful to have GlobalGiving as part of our support system for the horses in need here at Spirit Acres Farm. Last month’s donations allowed us to purchase $300.00 in necessary medical supplies and medicines. Daily we face many challenges; this includes paying our veterinarians for their services. Our horses heal and stay healthy as long as we have the necessary supplies and treatments on hand. We continue to depend on your life giving support for those we treat now and for maintenance items, such as vaccines, bandages and pain relief medicines as a mainstay for the needs of each day.
Looking ahead, our ultimate goal is to acquire enough funds to purchase an equine sling. This would tremendously speed recovery for the horse that needs to be supported in an up right and standing position. This type of equipment not only provides support and speeds recovery, but insures safety while healing.
Thank you GlobalGiving. And a heart felt thanks to those who have been moved to donate to the rescue and healing of beautiful equine friends at Spirit Acres Farm. Sincerely, Kat Matrician
