Rescuing Moses

Rescuing cats is a state of mind for the volunteers of NBCR.  While we focus on rescuing cats from the local shelter, sometimes the situation in which we find a cat is so dire, they are rescued before they ever get to the shelter. Two such kitties, Raven and Satchmo, were in desperate need of help.

Raven was nearly blind in one eye and needed immediate attention. After several months of medication her eye became in danger of rupturing and our dedicated veterinarian had to remove the injured eye. Thankfully, Raven is doing well.

Satchmo/Moses/Mo/The Old Man was hanging around a house where a lady was trapping neighborhood strays for spay/neuter. She'd never seen him before and was actually afraid of him because he looked so strange and scary. That set the wheels in motion to make sure New Beginnings rescued him. The next time Satchmo showed up he was easily bribed into being gently loaded in a carrier by our volunteer - no need for a trap with the power of salmon! He never hissed, growled or made a fuss. The next day he was taken to the vet for a physical exam and neutering/vaccinations. Upon closer inspection of his ears which appeared to be cut off, it was obvious they weren't cut off but instead scarred and his ear flaps (pinna) were mostly lost due to years of cat fights, but most damage was likely self-mutilation due to the horrendous load of ear mites and infection. He has what is referred to as 'cauliflower ear' and ear hematomas. He has huge, discolored cheeks that the vet said is all scar tissue. His teeth are yellowed and many are chipped and missing. From neck to tail he was one gigantic hair mat. The vet estimated his age at 10+ years. He's had quite a rough life and it is unbelievable that he has such a sweet spirit given his past. Today this old man is as sweet as sugar and cannot get enough petting. He will allow his foster to handle him in any way and rarely stops purring. When he sleeps he clings to his foster's side if he's not on top of her legs snoozing. We're not sure if he's adoptable based on appearance but one thing is for sure - his days on the outside are over and he's safe and sound from the dangers of life on the streets.

Roscoe is a 3 year old cat rescued from the local animal shelter.  He had several punctures and scratches on his front legs thanks to being an unneutered tomcat.  He is a sweet boy but needed time to heal, time that they don't have at a city shelter.  On physical exam a mild heart murmur was noted, a little unusual on a relatively young cat. Because of the murmur he was tested for heartworms and that test came back positive, as well as positive for FIV.  FIV is not a big deal as most FIV+ cats live to be 15-18 years old and pass away from the same things non-FIV cats pass away from.  He is currently being treated for heartworms and will be retested in about a month.

Thank you for supporting New Beginnings Cat Rescue.

The Whole Kaboodle

Emma
Emma

As we reflect on the successful rescues of the past year, we know that there is only a short period of time to get ready for the kitten season which will soon be upon us. With daylight increasing and the weather getting warmer, newborn kittens will soon appear. Many will be dropped off at local animal shelters and will need to be rescued before their time is up. If they are not tagged by a rescue organization, or adopted out by the shelter, they will be euthanized.

This was the situation in which we found Emma and Carla. Both cats were pregnant and had been dropped off at the local animal shelter where Carla gave birth to 6 kittens and Emma, while we aren’t sure how many she actually gave birth to, we do know she nurtured 9 kittens as her own.  It is, we are sure, the only reason the orphans survived as the need for mother's milk is especially critical in the  first 48 hours of life.

New Beginnings Cat Rescue tagged the momma cats and all the kittens. Though the mother cats are still waiting for a loving family, all 15 kittens have been adopted.  These kittens survived because you made it financially possible for the volunteers of New Beginnings Cat Rescue to do what they love to do;

Rescue Cats. Thank you!!

Older Lovable Cats

Carson
Carson

Hundreds of cats come through our rescue each year and most find their new home within 3 months. Some are older cats and it may take four times longer for them to be adopted than the younger cats and kittens.  Since November is Adopt-a-Senior-Pet Month, we wanted to tell you the rescue stories of some of our senior cats.

Meet 8 year old Carson, a typical sassy calico. She spent 10 months with various fosters at New Beginnings Cat Rescue, and also spent time at the adoption center. In September of 2013 she became very ill with acute hepatic lipidosis (fatty liver disease).. All the instability in her life caused her to become depressed and she refused to eat. The vet surgically inserted a feeding tube into her esophagus. Her sassiness prevailed and she got better.  This past October, a year after almost dying, Carson was adopted into a loving home.

Next, we have Mikey & Newton, these 5 year old black and white Tuxedo brothers were both rescued from being euthanized, coming from a hoarder situation. Both cats tested positive for FIV and both had to have full mouth extractions, leaving each with only 2 teeth. These handsome boys are both happy and playful and are ready to be adopted into their forever home.

Next there is 7 year old Tess, a beautiful gray and white Persian mix who beat the odds thanks to receiving the right treatment for hepatic lipidosis.  A healthy Tess is now ready to be adopted.

Last but not least is 6 year old Chrystal, a beautiful gray and white Russian Blue mix. She was rescued from a local kill shelter and is now looking to find a wonderful home with a loving family.

Thank you for supporting our project on Global Giving.  Without your support, I shudder to think where these precious senior cats would be today.  Thankfully, they will enjoy the rest of their 9 lives feeling full, warm and loved.
