Programs

Achieving Through Music The Achieving Through Music program, which began in 2000, supports at-risk children and youth through therapeutic music intervention, typically using percussion circles. The purpose of the program is to lower incidence of youth violence and other at-risk behaviors, and to improve academic performance and life skills, leading to improved educational and employment opportunities for these underserved youth. Understanding Cultures The Understanding Cultures program uses world music to teach core curricula, utilizing curricular resources that teachers and students love. Begun in 2000, this program offers an accessible and sophisticated introduction to basic music and movement, while integrating science, reading and social studies with world music. Nature of Music Our Nature of Music program at El Dorado School in San Francisco incorporates musical concepts into the teaching of language acquisition and language arts, and uses them to teach social studies. Next year, students will explore the plant life cycle and how it is related to the "roots of jazz," how harmony and dissonance are similar to helpers and pests in the garden, and how timbre and tone in musical composition are similar to garden landscaping. Music Plus Music Integration This replicable, highly scalable model offers free school planning and professional development to classroom and music teachers, principals, teaching artists and interns. We teach how to integrate music into the core curricula and to improve school culture. Music in Schools Today hosts three Learning Laboratory schools doing active research. Music Integrated Learning Environment Our largest program, Music Integrated Learning Environment (MILE) utilizes music to provide children instruction in literacy and math through music. Music teachers and kindergarten through fifth grade classroom teachers co-teach sequential music instruction, language literacy, and math literacy.
