Students Run LA...25 Years And Running

25 Years and Running…this upcoming SRLA season will be our 25th!  Since 1989, SRLA has trained more than 51,000 middle and high school youth from all over the greater Los Angeles area, to prepare them to complete the LA Marathon.  While running is the core activity of the program, SRLA students learn that hard work, discipline, and perseverance lead to success, both at the marathon and in life.

SRLA’s success is both staggering and a tradition!  Every year, more than 90% of the students who attempt the marathon complete it.  In March 2013, 99% of our 3,184 SRLA runners did so!  Even more impressively, every year, more than 90% of the seniors who run the Marathon with SRLA graduate from high school.  In June 2013, 99% of our 693 seniors did so!  The students train with teachers at their school who volunteer to train with and mentor them.  The students are active ten hours a week, on average, and learn to love running and being physically active.

During our upcoming 2013-14 season, we will train 3,200 students from 175 middle and high schools from around Los Angeles. SRLA must raise $300 per student, to provide each student with the uniforms and equipment, race entry fees, bus transportation, post-race nutrition over the 7-month training period.  What that $300 buys is priceless…

Bartolo at Manual Arts High School wrote “My involvement in Students Run LA has set me apart from bad influences and it has influenced me in getting better grades.”

Daniel at Santa Monica High School wrote, “While participating in Students Run LA I have lost weight…I have also become a leader to my sisters as I run with them weekly and push them to hopefully have them complete a marathon also.

Michelle at Aspire Pacific Academy wrote “I really liked the fact that running helped me clear my thoughts, and it also helped me release frustration and pain that had accumulated inside me.”

Nelson at Magnolia Science Academy wrote “SRLA has opened my eyes to the various opportunities this world has to offer.”

Help us provide our time-tested program of hope and opportunity to more students during our 25th anniversary season.  With your generous contributions, our students will become marathoners, graduates, and productive members of our community!  Thank you!

They did it again!  On Sunday, March 17th, there were 3,184 SRLA runners at the 2013 ASICS LA Marathon, and 99% of them crossed the finish line.  The phenomenal young people in SRLA are students are ages 12 through 19, in 7th through 12th grades. They began their training in August 2012, and put in many miles and hours of effort alongside their volunteer teacher/leaders.  Their six-month learning experience with SRLA has strengthened their bodies, their minds and their characters in a way that will last well beyond the marathon.

SRLA hears from our alumni repeatedly about how the lessons of preparing for and completing a marathon are truly life lessons.  As one young woman, now in her thirties, who ran the 2013 ASICS LA Marathon told us,

“It’s easy to get lost in junior high; especially in Los Angeles where enrollment is in the thousands.  Plus, it’s that dangerous, impressionable time in your life when you first start to define who you are as an individual.

SRLA believed in me.  It built the confidence I have in my abilities to take anything on.  It has made me who I am today.  Learning that I could fulfill such a huge, daunting dream has stuck with me.  Since then, I have developed an “I can do that” attitude regardless what the task may be.  Move across the country?  I can do that!  Graduate from MIT?  Sure thing!  Give up a paycheck to serve in AmeriCorps?  Let’s do it!  Find my dream job?  Check!”

Thank you to all of our supporters for helping us provide at-risk teenagers in Los Angeles this tremendous opportunity to participate in a glorious community event (the ASICS LA Marathon) and to have the life-changing experience of training for and completing a marathon!

3,000 SRLA Students -- Final Push to the 2013 LA Marathon

Running Changes Lives...
Running Changes Lives...

3,000 SRLA Students are coming down the stretch to the marathon

The 3,000 middle and high school students of Students Run LA (SRLA) are nearly ready!  They have been training with their volunteer teacher/leaders since last summer, and only have SRLA’s annual 18-Mile Friendship Run to complete before they have earned their marathon uniforms and entries.

We invite you to mark your calendars for these two big events:

  • SRLA’s 18th annual 18-Mile Friendship Run takes place at Hansen Dam in Lakeview Terrace on Sunday, February 10th.  This rigorous course is two loops around the park and across the dam…truly testing the physical endurance and mental toughness of our students.  Many have told us that one they completed this race, they were confident that they could run the full 26.2-mile marathon.  Registration is open to the public at http://www.imathlete.com/events/EventOverview.aspx?fEID=14493

If you don’t feel like running the full 18-mile course, there is the option to run ten miles instead.

  • The LA Marathon ® is Sunday, March 17th.   Look for our SRLA runners in their bright green singlets beginning at Dodger Stadium, then running through downtown Los Angeles, Hollywood and West Hollywood, Beverly Hills, and West LA, and ending up along San Vicente Boulevard and Ocean Avenue in Santa Monica.  Please celebrate St. Patrick’s Day this year by coming to the marathon and cheering for all of the runners!

These two events will mark the end of our SRLA season, but not the end of the impacts of SRLA.  SRLA is changing lives.  As Kevin, one of last year’s SRLA students told us:

“After joining SRLA I became more open to the idea of new things.  I made new friends and gained a new healthier appearance.

“Before running, I used to see college success as a dream that was only achievable by the elite.  But after crossing the finish line I realized that I can accomplish anything with hard work.
