Visit to CMC
Visit to CMC

Dear donors,

Greetings from IDEA!!

Festivals are in the air in India . We have many festivals in the months of October , November and December . Schools and colleges have long holidays for ‘ Diwali ‘ and its a right time for IDEA to organise co-curricular activities for our students . Many companies too approach us for celebrating these festivals with poor & needy children . They invite them to their company ; give them exposure ; share their joy with them .

Visit to CMC Academy

As part of our efforts to bring underprivileged children in the virtual world, about 13 children from IDEA beneficiaries got an opportunity to visit CMC Academy and learn basics of computer software and hardware. CMC is a Tata Enterprise and a subsidiary of TCS focussing on  Education and Training. It focuses on providing advanced skills for employment in IT, Finance and Accounts, Design & Creative, Office Management and several other areas.

Children were excited to get to sit in a glossy training room and learn computer basics. Employees of CMC also taught bookmarks and paper caps making which was an additional bite in their enthusiasm.

Vinaya knows where she wants to go!

Vinaya is 16 years old girl studying in 11th commerce stream in a college in Bhor one of our project locations. She lives with her parents and younger brother in a small village . They do not have a house of their own. They live in a small shelter provided by their relative. Vinaya’s father works as a tailor. He has a small tailoring shop where he stitches men’s clothes. Her mother works as a labourer in someone else’s farm. Both of them work hard to meet family’s requirements.

Vinaya’s parents are aware of the importance of education and are willing to support their daughter to complete her graduation. But sometimes they have to struggle hard on finances to meet both ends.

We conduct student mobilization sessions in the village community under skill development program. During one such session, we met Vinaya and gave information about computer literacy class. Very soon she joined the basic computer class run by IDEA foundation.

Vinaya knows the importance of computer learning but due to poor economic condition of the family she could not join any computer course earlier. Today she is one of the regular and sincere students of computer class. Within two months of learning computer, she is able to understand basic concepts of computer such as MS word, Excel and Power point.

Now her ambition is rejuvenated. She is exploring ways to learn more of computer such as tally because her aim is to focus on banking exam and work in a banking sector after getting through the exam.

Thank you donors for pitching in and motivating Vinaya and others to continue their computer education.

Career we build

grooming sessions
grooming sessions

Dear donors,

Greetings from IDEA!!

Girls under our skill development program were insisting to conduct informative sessions for them. Typically, girls from the slum community do not get opportunities and exposure for self grooming. Most of them are school/college going girls but they need inputs to be confident enough to live in the modern world. Therefore following 3 sessions were conducted by an expert from Social Work College for 2 days.

Resume writing and interview skills: This session included the entire process of selection right from the application including resume content to the joining procedures. Girls wanted to know more about the basic preparation for job interview. They also received important tips on hygiene, dressing and personality development

Communication skills: Levels of communication, levels of listening, types of body language including postures and gestures, movements, eye contact, orientation, presentation, looks, expressions of emotions. Management skills like mood management, stress management and change management were also discussed during the session.

Preparing for profession: Girls were enthusiastic to gain knowledge on following topics: Setting goals and planning for further advancement, understanding client base, how clients judge you, their requirements and principles in professionalism. Participants discussed essential qualities to build professional relations.

The expert beautifully explained the qualities required in the service sector. The participants received suggestions from the expert and they said it was very good for them.

Thank you dear donors for being so generous. It is only because of you these girls get an exposure to be capable of entering a job market.

Turning point in Sangeeta’s life

Sangeeta’s childhood was like any other girl in a middle class family of India. She completed a diploma in education and worked as a teacher for 10 years. She was earning well enough. After few months, she started facing problems in her career as well as in the family. Due to some conflicts with the school management, she was forced to resign. Her relations with husband were not on good terms as he was a severe alcoholic. She separated from her husband. She was going through a bad phase in a personal and professional life. She had decided not to continue as a teacher any more. At the age of 38 she wanted to gain some skills in a short period to be able to find an alternative livelihood other than teaching.

At this point she came to know about IDEA. She decided to join bedside assistant course, as she is deeply interested in serving the patients. She got a push from her sister who is also a nurse in the hospital. She was one of the sincere and bright students in the batch. She secured ’A+’Grade in the exam at the end of 6 months. While doing internship in a hospital, she decided to work a private nurse. She enrolled herself in a nearby Nursing bureau. She gets work through that bureau and is earning approximately between Rs. 8000-10000 per month.

She was very happy to share her experience of using those skills for her relative. Her uncle was serious with some leg infection and had to ampute that leg. He could not dress up by himself. Being a nurse, Sangeeta immediately came forward to dress her uncle and was deeply satisfied for being able to do that.

Thank you for making Sangeeta become self reliant and confident. Please continue to shower your blessings so that we could prepare many more Sangeetas from the underprivileged women.

Festivities in the air

Strengthening ties through IDEA
Strengthening ties through IDEA

Dear donor,

Warm greetings from IDEA!

IDEA’s learning centers are full of activities from past 2-3 months. It is a festive season and children are taking full advantage to learn through fun. A brief on those activities:

Rakshabandhan is a celebration of a relation of a brother and sister. Sisters tie the silk thread called Rakhi on their brother's wrist and pray for their well being and brothers promise to take care of their sisters. Children in our study centers learned to make Rakhi from scratch and tied them to each other. Poster making competition on gender equality was also held on the same day with a participation of 60 girls and boys from 2 communities. At the end, an expert from Bhaashaa conducted an interesting session involving all the children. Bhaashaa is a non-profit organization which promotes preservation, expression and dissemination of the greatest possible number of languages and dialect.

World literacy day: IDEA children from all the centers participated in a nationwide campaign called ‘One story one day’ by Pratham books on world literacy day. Same story was read in all the centers. Pratham is an Indian brand of non-profit publisher of story books for children.

Sandwich making: Employees from Tata-Trent volunteered to teach sandwich making to children in one of our centers. Children were thrilled to do it by hand. They also taught greeting card making to our children.

Bhondala:Girls from those 3 centers assembled to play bhondla (dance in a circle) while singing traditional songs. In ancient days, women had very little liberty to move out of the houses. Due to lack of technological revolution, women remained busy finishing the tight schedule of household core. Hence festivals dominated by community activity like Bhondla were essential to vent out the stressed emotions. It was the right chance for them to mix with other women for sharing their minds. Today, it has become a fun activity for the girls. Children also used this opportunity to organize a rally in the community with a message on gender equality.

Daan Utsav (Joy of Giving Week): Daan utsav is a celebration of giving. This year IDEA’s participation was in collaboration with Prorigo Software Pvt. Ltd., Marriott, Symbiosis Institute of Telecom Management and Tata Communications. The activities undertaken were sandwich making, dance performance, talent exchange with mentally challenged, wish tree, exhibition cum sale of products made by underprivileged women (beneficiaries of skill development program of IDEA). We were overwhelmed by the response from volunteers, corporate, NGOs and individuals.

Thank you all of you for your continuous support. You are an encouragement to keep our spirit alive and reach out to many more children. Thank you for reading this. We are delighted to see your participation in some or the other way.
