Calicanto is a community based organization dedicated to safeguarding the historic and human heritage of Panama City's inner city historic district through social, educational, cultural, and conservation programs and initiatives.
Our three primary social programs are:
1. The CAPTA program, which prepares and trains unemployed women to work in the hospitality industry. To date over 140 previously unemployed women have graduate and 74% have been permanently employed (see video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b0HevUvQ4_k)
2. ENLACES, a preventative program for children between 9 and 13 living in at-risk communities in Panama City. The program nurtures children's artistic potential and provides tools for personal and social development.
3. ESPERANZA, (Hope in spanish) gives young men from street gangs the tools that will allow them to move away from violence and re-integrate into mainstream society through an eight weeks program of emotional development, life skills, professional training and job placement.
