The GOD'S CHILD Project

The GOD'S CHILD Project mission is "to break the bitter chains of poverty through education and formation." While GOD'S CHILD is rooted in education, we aim to support the communities we serve at every level of development. Through our wide range of programs, we help children and families living in extreme poverty to meet their basic needs and find a restored sense of hope, self-worth and human dignity.

Laura's Christmas present

Laura before
Laura before

Laura arrived at Casa Jackson weighing exactly 15 pounds—impossibly tiny for a 3-year-old girl. Our staff struggled to help Laura. Due to growing up in a home where food was not regularly available, Laura was unaccustomed to eating and struggled against our staff. Over the next few months, Laura’s weight fluctuated. Several times, our medical staff had to place a tube through her nose to deliver formula directly into her stomach to prevent her from losing any more weight.

Some weeks, little Laura truly was fighting for her life. Despite visiting a number of specialists, it remained unclear why Laura was so plagued with medical and developmental issues. We continued to provide her with the medical care, nutrition and affection that are the cornerstones of our in-patient program. Although she continued to fall ill from time to time, as the year wore on, Laura grew heavier and healthier.

After spending an entire year at Casa Jackson, Laura is finally healthy enough to return home to her loving mother and very devoted father. Laura is incredibly weak from being malnourished for much of her life and cannot sit or stand without a great deal of support. Her recovery required took a full year of support and patience; her on-going recuperation will take far longer. Laura’s parents have been taught how to best care for their fragile young daughter—and with continued support from Casa Jackson—Laura will receive the medical attention she needs to
continue the long process of healing.

As Laura´s family celebrates her homecoming this Christmas, we want to thank you for giving Laura the greatest gift of all: her health. Merry Christmas from the babies, families, volunteers and staff of Casa Jackson.

Sandra's long journey

Sandra
Sandra

This Christmas, as we give thanks for our families and our lives, we encourage you to remember  those less-fortunate. We hope you’ll remember people like Sandra as you enjoy the holidays with your loved ones.

Sandra won an award for attendance and punctuality at Scheel Center this year. The remarkable thing about this young woman isn’t that she was never absent or late from school this year…it’s that she wakes up at 3 AM every day to make it to class on time.

Sandra lives in a very remote area. The closest bus stop is an hour’s walk from her family’s small farm. Then, she takes two transfers to get to school. After classes, Sandra doesn’t linger around the courtyard to gossip with her friends. Instead, she starts the long journey home so she can be there before nightfall.

This girl has big dreams for her future. She is an artist at heart and loves to sing and play guitar. It is rare to find this kind of dedication in anyone, much less in a teenage girl who is already the most well-educated member of her family.

This Christmas, we hope that you’ll take a moment to reflect upon your good fortune and the struggles of those who were born into a different life. We hope you’ll remember Sandra and her determination to have a better life as you celebrate with your loved ones. And we hope that you’ll be generous in this season of giving with a donation that encourages Sandra and the other 150 Scheel students that they are never alone on their long journey.

Education, a Priceless Gift

Credit Taylor Aubin

There are gifts you remember. This year, Ana will remember hers. And she’ll remember us. Because to Ana, ITEMP is the closest thing to Santa Claus she has ever experienced. Better than she dreamed of, she says.

And if there is one thing—probably the only thing—that Ana has never lacked, it’s dreams. When you listen to this young woman, you cannot help being fascinated by her willingness to fight and determination to live a meaningful life.

But life has not been so tender to Ana. She was born the product of rape, into a family where her mother’s husband vowed never to love her. To earn his approval,Ana dressed and acted like a boy. And worked liked one, too. Ana fell victim to labor exploitation and was soon told to go work near Guatemala’s border with El Salvador. But, thankfully, Ana refused. She knew that the “work” was in a brothel, and refused to let her life end in such a painful way. So she ran away.

When Ana first came to us, her aged face told a million stories of pain, anger, distrust, and even violence. But Ana is an artist and a poet, too, so music and acting soothes her to some extent. There is much more work to be done with Ana, though.

When she entered our program, Ana was given a bed, a new school uniform, a living allowance, medical and psychological care and, most importantly, an education. Unlike most girls her age, Ana’s Christmas wish wasn’t for new clothes or more makeup. Her dream was simple and yet so powerful: Just let me keep going to school, she said. And, for the first time in Ana’s life, she will go to school for the second year in a row. And this is priceless for her. But not for us. Not for you. With a donation of only $25, you can support Ana’s school tuition for a month.

What’s your wish for Christmas this year? A new DVD? Or a better world for us all? Make Ana’s simple wish come true this holiday season with your generous donation.
