In 2007 when we started our food pantry, it was designed to be a source of food to supplement what our clients were receiving at other food banks. We had a large monthly budget and kept it fully stocked at all times.
Times are very different today. Today, those other food pantries don't exist. Our budget is half of what it used to and the clients are dependent on us as their sole source of food. We can not keep food stocked for more than a day or so and our staff has limited time to access the food banks in the area.
As we move forward with our core services, we contemplate shutting the food pantry down all together and focusing our nutritional efforts on the daily meals we provide. With your help, we won't have to make this tough decision. Plain and simple.

Francis House opened our food panrty in 2007 with the intent to be a supplemental food pantry for the few clients that we served each day. As we have quickly gone through the last eight years, we have become so much more than that.
In 2014, our very small food pantry distibuted over $27,000 worth of food and hygiene products to over 300 unduplicated households. We have become so much more than a supplemental pantry. We have become their sole food source. That is a lot of pressure on a tiny pantry.
We maximize every dollar that comes our way by shopping at our local Feeding America Food Bank and we get our hygiene products from the dollar store. Our budget is small and our funding is never gauranteed.
I have included pictures in this project report, something I don't normally do because of the confidentiality of the clients that utilize it. Today was different, yesterda we went shopping. We got everything that was available to us at the food bank and put it on our shelves. We tried to cover each and every shelf. We failed. We failed to obtain healthy, nutritious food. We are limited to what is available to us. The pictures included represent $133 worth of food.
We are grateful for the assistance we have recieved and hope to fill each and every shelf in the future.
This morning, I was approached by a client that asked "How come we have no food in our food pantry?"
We have been getting this question more and more as the holidays area approaching. Somehow, hunger hurts more over the holidays. We have been struggling to keep our pantry shelves stocked. The demand for food has certainly outweighed the supply that we can provide.
Francis House operates it's pantry on a $500 per month budget from a private foundation. As you can imagine, $500 does not go far. We continue to utilize our local food bank to obtain the most food for our dollar, but even they are struggling to keep their shelves filled. The local food bank provides food for agencies across two counties and we sometimes get to the warehouse and find the shelves empty.
We continue to look to our community and our supporters to run food drives, shop for buy one, get one deals and even super coupon! Your donations have been a tremendous help to us just when we find ourselves in the most need.
