From an application to join the RO Youth Council

We received this application from a 17-year-old in Illinois to join our youth council.

In my 17 years of living, I believe I have gone through more things than any teen should have to. In the past few months, everyday I would wake up with an unimaginable weight on my shoulders. I would dredge through school with teachers, friends, and parents not understanding how I feel, what I'm thinking, and how hard it is for me not to end it all. I felt like no one knew what it was like to be on anti-depressants and still feel incredibly low. The only thing that stopped me from ending it all was this miracle of a website called, us.reachout.com. While googling ways to commit suicide I stumbled upon this website. After many hours of watching videos, reading testimonials, and doing some simple reflection, I came to the glorious conclusion to push on, and make it through. In the following months, I told my parents, started going to counseling, consulted my doctor, and started to change my personality and outlook on life. I feel like I am more than prepared and ready to take on any challenge that the committee can give me and would be honored to serve on the Reach Out Youth Council.

With your help, we are planning to bring on 8 new Council members from across the U.S. like this young man, fly our entire council (which will be 15) to San Francisco to meet each other and participate in training sessions designed to give them the skills they need to help us promote Reach Out to their peers. Thanks again for your ongoing support!

Reach Out Youth Council Outreach On myYearbook

myYearbook homepage takeover

Thanks to everyone for your support! Beginning on Christmas Day, five youth council members will be helping us to manage our new fan page on myYearbook.com, one of the largest youth online social networks. myYearbook has generously offered to donate regular homepage takeovers, which will drive thousands of users to "fan" us on their site. We have been working with our council members to train them to be ambassadors on our behalf as well as monitoring our page for any posts from myYearbook members who may be in crisis. This outreach is part of a larger strategy to be where young people are, i.e. "the digital streets" vs. forcing them to find us. We feel it is important to have young people on the front lines (our council members), letting other young people know about our resource. Attached are images of what our homepage takeover and fan page will look like. Check out myYearbook.com on x-mas Day to see it live!
