Give Gifts for Good this Holiday Season

Hello there, wonderful supporters!

We hope that you all are doing well and enjoying the beautiful mess of busyness and delight that the holidays can bring! In this special season of thanksgiving and reflecting, we would be remise if we did not take a moment to tell you all how incredibly grateful we are for each and every one of you. We appreciate your support, your giving hearts, your continued partnership, and your continued patience with our many emails and social media exploits. You all are our heros!

We also wanted to send you a little update on the wonderful happenings at Bicycles for Humanity - Georgia, and ways that you can give gifts with lasting impact this holiday season!

  • We hosted two incredibly fun film screenings in Athens and Atlanta this fall, for the Georgia premier of "Where on Earth is My Bike?"! We had an absolute blast, and would love to share photos from these events with you on our Facebook page.
  • Some amazingly talented friends of B4H GA created a video for us from footage of our May evaluation trip to Namibia. If you haven't seen it already, it is worth the watch!
  • Gifts for Good this holiday season: There are so many ways that you can give empowerment and hope through transporation this year! By donating through the GlobalGiving Gifts for Good giftshop, you can select to receive a free bracelet made by women of the Namibian Himba tribe! And, to make it even better, EVERY donation for the month of December will receive a link to download an exclusive, pre-release track from our very own co-founder, Davis Harwell's upcoming album! A little ear candy(cane), as I like to say.

And, saving the best for last, we are thrilled to announce that we are over halfway to our fundraising goal for sending our second shipment of bikes to Namibia!! Great work, team!! Let's keep it going strong throughout the new year!

Thank you again for all that you do, and the wonderful support that you provide to Bicycles for Humanity - Georgia and the people we serve. We are honored to be on this journey with you!!

Happy Holidays to you and yours, from us and ours -

Thank you for impacting the lives of others!

We returned in May from our wonderful trip to visit our partners in Namibia, and have hearts filled with gratitude to each and every one of you who helped participate in making it possible. We visited the Joy Center in Otjiwarongo where 50 bikes from the Atlanta/Athens area were used to help support their community and their efforts to take care of orphaned children. We met with Lavinia and partners at DEEP --the Disability Economic Empowerment Project-- in Oshakati, where 50 more of our bikes were used to help support economic opportunities for Namibians with physical and developmental disabilities. And, lastly, we spent time in Okalongo, where we met with the lovely Meme Rauha, who is an elder in her village, a bike mechanic and humanitarian. Rauha repairs bicycles, sells and distributes them to individuals in the area. She told us of children using the bicycles to get to school, and families using the bicycles as ambulances to get to the nearest clinic, a 20 minute car ride away. Your gifts of time, finances, bicycles and spreading the word have made lasting impacts in lives and communities half way around the world. Thank you, Dankie, & Tangi Unene!

We have uploaded some photographs from the support trip, and would love to share them with you: Namibia 2012 Support/Evaluation Trip Album

And now, some more exciting news, we are moving forward with our next shipment! And thus begins the incredible journey to raise $12,000 and 400 bikes to send to communities in northern Namibia in 2013. We have created a new Global Giving page for our next project, with a goal of raising $3,000 of the total $12,000 through the help of our wonderful supporters on GlobalGiving! For those in the Athens/Atlanta, GA, USA area, we have some wonderful upcoming events that you will not want to miss, as well as loads of ways for everyone to be a part of the empowerment process! We are so excited to continue this journey with you all!

From our B4H family to yours, thank you! ~ Davis & Mary Harwell

Dear wonderful supporters -

We hope this email finds you well! I am so excited and humbled to write you today, on the eve of our support and evaluation trip to Namibia. Our small team will leave for Namibia on Tuesday, May 1st, and will be in-country for 7 days. We wanted to send you a detailed update of our trip, so that you can know what to expect, and what our goals will be while we are there. Additionally, don't forget that our April match grant lasts for only one more day! All donations in April are being matched dollar for dollar through a generous and anonymous donor. Double your financial impact by giving today!

We are also thrilled to let you know that we discovered that our shipment of bikes was not only able to provide expanded workshop space and re-supply to our partners in Okalongo, but that 50 bikes respectively were distributed to support workshops in Otjiwarongo, Namibia and Oshakati, Namibia as well. Your support and generosity has affected so many people throughout the country!

Our goals while in Namibia are to evaluate the shipment and process in order to gauge our effectiveness and determine how to best support projects presently and in the future. We will also meet with additional partners in the region to grow our connections and resources. Here are some additional details of our itenerary:

- Otjiwarongo - We will have a brief visit to the Joy Center Bike Shop, where 50 of our bikes were distributed as our container made it's way to Okalongo. The good people of the Joy Center use proceeds from their bike shop to help sustain an orphanage for local children left parentless due to HIV/AIDS and other factors.

- Tsumeb - We will have a meeting in Tsumeb, to meet with some potential partners for increased support of our projects in the region.

- Oshakati - We will have a brief visit to DEEP, the Disability Economic Empowerment Project, where 50 of our bikes were distributed as our container made it's way to Okalongo. DEEP is a truly innovative project using the bike shop to not only supply the region with needed transportation, but to also provide economic opportunities for Namibians with developmental and physical disabilities.

- Okalongo - Of course, this is where the majority of our time will be spent. We have been in communication with our wonderful partners in Okalongo, and are so excited to spend time with these individuals and to learn how they were able to use the container and bicycles. We will use this time to learn and grow together for greater impact in the future. Do you have a question that you would like us to ask our partners in Okalongo? If so, let us know via Twitter or Facebook!

- Walvis Bay - Walvis Bay is the port where our container first landed in Namiba, after its ocean voyage. We will be meeting with shipping suppliers in the area, to further our network and hopefully streamline our shipping process from Atlanta and to communities in Namibia.

Sound like enough meetings to fit into 7 days? {smile} We also aim to cross our paths with some of Namibia's beautiful landscape, vegetation and wildlife during our time in the country. Is there a particular African animal or scenary that you would like for us to try and photographically capture? Let us know via Facebook or Twitter!

Thank you so much for your continued support and dedication to this project! We absolutely could not do this without supporters like you, with loving and giving hearts for the people of our shared globe. THANK YOU!! Follow us through our journey in Namibia by liking us on Facebook and following us on Twitter.

With gratitude,

Mary Harwell
and the B4H family
