On October 11th, the Kibera School for Girls and the Kibera community joined together to recognize and celebrate the rights and value of girls for the very first International Day of the Girl Child. View photos from the celebration!
We are proud to have your support in our movement for change! While we are closing this particular project page in order to consolidate our presence on Globalgiving, we encourage you to migrate your support to Shining Hope for Communities' Girl Effect Project Page. The Challenge starts on November 1st (next week!) and we need you to rally the highest number of grassroots supporters to help us win $25k to grow our impact! Tell your friends & family to support the Girl Effect in Kibera by making any level of contribution on our Girl Effect Project Page. Every donation counts!
This Fall, our work empowering girls & their familes is featured by Half the Sky Movement, a campaign inspired by Nicholas Kristof & Sheryl WuDunn. Nicholas Kristof and Half the Sky Celebrity Advocate Olivia Wilde make a visit to SHOFCO! WATCH the FILM >>
We're proud to share with you the poem below from Vanessa, a 2nd grade student at the Kibera School for Girls:
I am Vanessa
I am as brave as a lion
I work hard to achieve my dream of becoming a doctor
I am a flower
I make your garden full with beautiful colors
I am the happiest girl in The Kibera School for Girls
Whatever I am, I am always happy because I know
Even if I am by myself
There is somebody who cares for me and loves me
I am beautiful
I love how I was created
I am the Grumpy Bear
I always know your feelings
I make your dreams come true
I am brave because I look forward to my education success
I am enormous because everyone in The Kibera School for Girls knows me
And even there are some people around the area who know me
I am a little angel
I fly to help other people survive
I am the wind
I give you fresh air
I am the sun
I make your crops grow
I am special
I work hard for my teachers and parents
I am as brown as the sun
I am shining
I am a human being
I am the playful girl in The Kibera School for Girls
I am graceful, hopeful, and lovely
I am the most brilliant girl in the whole wide world
I AM ME!

Wishing you a wonderful beginning of September from all of us at Shining Hope for Communities! We are gearing up for an exciting fall, and are tremendously grateful for your continued support of our work. Enjoy the updates below and have a great Labor Day weekend!
Johanna Justin-Jinich Community Clinic
Our clinic HIV services are currently undergoing expansion. Our clinic will soon be able to provide ARVs to children. In addition, through a partnership with the Ministry of Health and Malteser International, we will soon be able to provide comprehensive TB treatment and care.
Youth Peer Provider Program: Sexual Health Education
Our partnership with Planned Parenthood International is helping to expand our Youth Peer Provider (YPP) program, which trains local youth to educate their peers about sexual and reproductive health. We've started to make plans for the expansion, which will include turning a floor of our second community center into a YPP dedicated space that will be used for youth meetings, workshops, and distribution of sexual and reproductive health information and materials.
Clean Water Project
There are currently 524 households (with a total of 2,242 household members) buying water from our clean water kiosk. Over the first six months the water tower has earned a 28% profit.
Kibera School for Girls
We are thrilled to announce that Headmistress Anne Olwande has given birth to a healthy baby girl! Born on the day of our students' triumphant success at Kenya's National Poetry and Elocution Festival, Headmistress Anne's beautiful baby girl is named Aileen in honor of the poem the students performed: 'After a Bath' by Aileen Fisher.
We are enrolling a new class of students in January 2013 and are on the search for dedicated individuals, like you, who are interested in supporting of our new pre-kindergarteners. If you know anyone who would be interested in sponsoring one of our new students, please don't hesitate to put them in contact with the Director of KSG Sponsorship: alix@shininghopeforcommunities.org. Sponsorship support will cover education expenses (teacher salaries, school supplies and curriculum), daily nourishment (two meals/day), psychosocial support, uniforms, field trips, and primary healthcare at our Johanna Justin-Jinich Community Clinic. Sponsor funds may also be used to cover the costs of prescription medications, eyeglasses, dental work, and even special dietary needs. Unfortunately, without sponsorship funds, these needs and others are often not met.
Your birthday is the perfect opportunity to grow our impact!
