Fabulous African Fabrics Has Updated Website

Hats by Lucy for HS Tuition
Hats by Lucy for HS Tuition

Fabulous African Fabrics is constantly working to improve its organization and its opportunities.  Our first website dating to 2007 was beautiful and useful.  But it was no longer possible for us to add more new information to our web pages.  This week we  posted a revised website, keeping our former URL.  We have added a page about our relationship with Global Giving, explaining how we became interested in GG, how we were able to become a part of Global Giving, and how people can donate to the Good Samaritan Children's Home through GlobalGiving.

It is easier to post pictures, sell items, and edit our pages with this new site.  Please visit us at www.fabulousafricanfabrics.org and tell us what you like or don't like about this new site.  We are still working on the website, so look for more features soon.

I enclose a picture of the African textile hats Lucy Ramshaw makes for FAF to sell.

School Holiday and a "Thank You" note

Early this month, schools throughout Kenya closed for second semester school holidays.  School holidays are always eagerly awaited by all students especially those residing in boarding schools.  Most children look forward to seeing and catching up with their family members and relatives. However, some who may not be fortunate enough to have such families throng to places that provide shelter and love them. One such a place is the Good Samaritan Children Home located in Mathare slums, Nairobi. Mercy Thuo, the founder and owner of the home looks forward to receiving “her children” as any parent would. She goes out of her way to make sure all children are loved and have access at least, to the very basic human needs (i.e. food, shelter, and clothing) once they are “home”.

One thing the children residing at the Good Samaritan Children Home keep talking about is how thankful they are to all those who helped buy them school uniform and shoes. They feel wonderful and presentable in their mandatory school attire, including shoes. The availability of these educational requirements has been made possible by generous donations made so far. To all who have made such contributions, the children wish to say, THANK YOU!

Fabulous African Fabrics Organization looks forward to your support this October during GlobalGiving Bonus Day. It is important to note that The Good Samaritan Children Home continually receives children with various life and educational needs. Sacrificing our little comfort to support such children makes a huge difference. So, let’s make it happen!

More Teens in High School

We at Fabulous African Fabrics were thrilled to receive a check from Global Giving for $1848 for our Bonus Day  earnings in June.  You have sent two more teens to high school..

The tuition bill is always a great worry for the director of The Good Samaritan Home, Mercy Thuo.  Mrs.Thuo knows the value of education, and she is proud of the young people who have studied very hard to qualify for high school.  Each year it is a scramble to find the funds for sixty or so children to go to school.  Depending on the teen, it may be to the local secondary school, a trade school, or a private boarding school.  Boarding schools sometimes offer scholarships to needy children.  But none-the-less one thousand dollars needs to be found for each child--$60,000 to $100,000 per year.

When the tuition is not raised, the youngest children stay at the orphanage, repeating their 8th grade studies so they will retain the information to help them succeed when their turn for tuition money arrives.

Thank you for your generosity.  Two more teens will be educated and happily go off to school.
