Staffed primarily by survivors, SASANE works to end the physical and sexual exploitation of women and girls, secure their legal rights, and empower them to live free and dignified lives. Paralegal Program Continues & Expands to Pokhara

SASANE
SASANE's 6th Annual General Assembly Meeting

SASANE’s Paralegal Training Program continues to be successful in Kathmandu, with our most recent group of women receiving the highest exam pass rate among our paralegal trainees to date. In addition, we have thirty new paralegal trainees ready to begin the program on August 20th. SASANE’s certified paralegals from previous trainees are currently working in police stations around Kathmandu Valley, and many have begun to take on educator roles in SASANE’s continued trainings.

Due to the continued success of this project, SASANE has decided to expand its Paralegal Training Program to Pokhara. Pokhara is one of Nepal's most beautiful cities, popular among tourists for its mountain views and lakeside attractions. Unfortunately, many women in Pokhara live in poverty and are exploited by the sex trafficking industry. SASANE has decided to combat sex trafficking in this area through our paralegal training program. Fifteen new paralegal trainees will be joining our program beginning August 20th, and we hope in the future to be able to fund the program in Pokhara for thirty trainees.

Our work is made possible only through the donations received through GlobalGiving. From these donations, we have been able to provide valuable training and sustainable employment for survivors of human trafficking. In turn, our paralegals are able to help other survivors navigate the legal system, preventing re-victimization and helping these women attain justice. With your help, we hope that we will be able to carry on this successful program and continue expanding it to other major cities throughout Nepal.

Thank you for your continued support.

Congratulate the passed 21 paralegal girls

Paralegal Girls with paralegal Certificates 2012
Paralegal Girls with paralegal Certificates 2012

From February 2012, The 30 human trafficking survivors were given the fifth paralegal training. One month is the theoretical class and the other six month is the practical. In the theoretical class, the legal procedure of the Nepalese law system is dealt with and in the practical class the similar theoretical learned things are applied. The main objective of the paralegal training is to make the victim of the human trafficking able to file complaint against the culprit by themselves. And to also make them aware about the legal procedures as well. Kathmandu District Court is supposed to take the paralegal examination, but due to the political instability the exam was taken only on February' 2013. 30 trafficking survivors who were taking the training took the examination. Due to the delay in the examination, the trainees this time took 12 months of the practical courses. Among 30 examiners, 21 passed the examination and took the paralegal certificate. The paralegals who received the certificate are sent out of the valley for the public service and from this they also earn some money for themselves. This time we have already sent the paralegals to Pokhara. The failed trainees again have to receive the paralegal training in 2013 and take exam in 2014. We congratulate the passed 21 paralegals. This work is possible only through the donation which has been made possible by Global Giving. With this we have been able make the survivors sustained in the society. Till now we have already sustained 130 survivors with the paralegal training. From July 13, we are starting the new paralegal training. As earlier we will provide training to 30 survivors. For this we expect to get as much from you as possible. With your help, we hope that our training will be successful. Thank you

SASANE paralegals achievement in case filed.

SASANE believes that each survivor can achieve her individual dream and potential through the Paralegal training. The paralegals have been doing a huge labor and supporting the victims who have been filing the cases in 25 police stations. Due to their support the victims have been getting justice fast and without any difficulty. SASANE have been writing a lot of reports from 2012-13 with the help of the paralegals that also in a data based system but this system is not fully completed. From the tentative report SASANE mentions that between April 2012 to January 2013 our paralegals have filed report against 57 missing children and 202 missing women and men and 8 FIRs (first information report) have been filed against human trafficking and 26 are filed against polygamy. We have six cases of rape, 272 of domestic violence and 330 of missing passports. From the statistics we can see that the percent is higher in domestic violence, missing passports and also missing women and men, but the percentage of women filing the cases against this is also found increasing. From this we can say that if a woman is helped by woman in this cases than the confidence of the woman rises and she will be able to report against the ill behavior been shown to her. This is the positive outcome that SASANE paralegals have been able to show. The SASANE paralegals have been persuading other techniques in order to help the women in trouble so that those women feel comfortable enough to come forward and file cases against the torture they have been facing. The new paralegals are also desperately waiting for the paralegal exam to start soon. We have given paralegal training to 180 girls including the recent ones. SASANE's paralegal have faced the real causes are still subordinated and their fundamental rights are violated. They are the persons who need to be reintegrated. They are eager to shun their dark past at the hope of a brighter future. In the upcoming environment they would be an asset for the society rather than a liability. In order to bring a new tomorrow and to prevent the girls from being prone to ill behaviors SASANE needs your support so that it can keep on manufacturing the paralegals always. Thank you.
